I will never forget that this is what Americans voted for. Not by accident. Not for the lolz. Not as a protest. On purpose. And yes. I know “not all Americans.” I know that many Americans on this site, in particular, opposed him. But not nearly enough of you. You have declared economic war on us, your most loyal ally and trading partner. You have torn up trade treaties and a century of friendship over a lie. There is virtually no fentanyl coming over the Canadian border. And very few migrants.

Tonight, as a Canadian, as an Albertan - and, incidentally as a once-proud graduate of Stanford University - I stand with my country. With our farmers. Our energy workers. Our auto workers. Our forestry workers. All our exporters. And all our consumers. This is going to hurt our economy in ways we can’t yet imagine. But I believe we will hold fast and hold strong.

So Trump is driving away America's customers permanently. It's Bexit but here it would be Trexit.

@SueDiOh @Paulatics No.
All y'all sleep-walked into fascism while literally everybody in the world outside was warning you about it.
You did it anyway.
You did it actively (by voting for him) or passively (by not actively fighting against him and hoping things would work out for the best). Either way you're culpable and YOU have to fix your problem.
Then you'll have to rebuild over a century of goodwill blown in a few short years.
Maybe in another century.

Because they remembered he wrote the cheques but couldn't or wouldn't understand that he caused the problem in the first place (it'll have been the fault of immigrants or antifa or some such). And this time, when they won't get the cheques, they'll still think their hardship is the fault of anyone or everyone other than the bloke they voted for because to do otherwise they'd have to accept they'd been conned. Twice.

Now is the time for all good people to stand up for the aspects of humanity we share - of decency and kindness, of hard-won wisdom, of tolerance and free speech and equal justice under law.
We Americans make no excuse for the madness and foolishness of our fellow citizens.
It is enough to say we will rise again, that good cannot merely hope evil will pass away - it must be opposed from within and without.
This I will say: we of Mastodon, here assembled, will do what we can do.

@Paulatics Thank you, Senator, it’s reassuring to hear leadership when so much is at stake.
I can’t help but feel deep embarrassment and disappointment at the Alberta govt's response thus far. Instead of standing with Canada, our Premier seems willing to throw the entire country under the bus just to protect the oil & gas industry. That’s not leadership. It’s self-serving and deeply un-Canadian.
We deserve better than a Premier who won’t stand up for us unless it benefits her politically.

As an American citizen, I reject the politics of division from both US and Canadian politicians and I chose to stand with all democratic elected nations as we navigate the fear of WW3 and terrorists taking hostages around the world.
This trade war is not happening out of context but the discussion around the trade war is entirely out of context. An elected office is greater than one person's personal grievances as is the relationship between Canada and the US.

I was surprised the first time. Maybe ‘they’ thought he would be different as President. But he was a lunatic then, too.
I was deeply disappointed and saddened last year when they chose him again. They KNEW he was dumb and dangerous and they believed the never-ending stream of lies. I’m still depressed.
(My mother had a saying about people like him: ‘He will lie when the truth would suit better.’)
And now, the #democrats are just watching the madness unfold.
