It reminds me of when the fundie Christian types were up on television sets pounding their pulpits about pornography. It's undermining the morals of society, pornography is, and they know because they watched it as part of their censorship!

If pornography is such a drain on morals, though ... why should I trust the person who watched it to determine that it was a drain on morals? Why because THEY aren't fooled by pornography, naturally! They're immune! Only the weak-minded are impacted.

The self-aggrandizing hypocrisy of censors sometimes amazes me.

I just read this long thread about how TikTok, being under control of the Chinese government, has been used as a tool to influence elections specifically blaming TikTok for Romanian outcomes.

Read between the lines, however, and you'll see what's at work: pure sneering ego. "TikTok fooled the masses, but NOT ME! I'm too smart to be fooled by this, but the weak-minded masses must be protected!"

It's repulsive.

Please, for the love of whatever you hold holy that isn't the $, when reporting on the wildfires, STOP INTERVIEWING GOD-DAMNED MILLIONAIRES ABOUT THE "IMPACT" THE FIRE IS HAVING ON THEIR LIVES!

Rich folk who lose everything they own will come out the other side of this just fine. Ignore them. Focus your attention on people who had $100 in savings and have just lost everything. People whose lives have been OBLITERATED with no exit path.

It's coming up to spring festival and thus to the time for cleaning up.

I have a few things to clean up in my digital life:

1. Ditching mastodon.online for another service that doesn't suppress knowledge of Israel's genocide.

2. Migrating away from @protonprivacy after its founder bent the knee to fascists.

I'm open to suggestions on either front.

As a postscript, for the inevitable American "instant expert", here's a search on 小红书 on Taobao. You'll just have to trust me that the search results continue looking like this for the hundreds of pages that get listed. Next to it is the search for 红宝书, the actual affectionate title for Mao's book. Notice any differences?

I know it's very difficult for people coming from diffuse societies to understand the nature of discrete societies, but concentrate here: in all of southeast Asia you're not going to generally find people making disparaging and belittling nicknames for people higher up in society or their output. This is true even if they disagree with that person.

There's NO way that "Little Red Book" would ever be the nickname for the "Treasured Red Book" even by opponents of Mao!

"Little Red Book" is a disparaging name given to "Quotations of Chairman Mao" BY WESTERNERS. The formal Chinese name, 毛主席语录, translates to what I just cited and the affectionate name is 红宝书, or "Treasured Red Book".

You don't use "little" when describing things other than children or your (VERY good!) friends in China. It's disparaging and disrespectful, and I guarantee you that, outside of some dissidents, you're not going to find people publicly calling that book "little".

1. What would a Fediverse-style search system look like?

2. Is there such a thing yet?

Note: I'm not talking about metasearch engines. I'm talking about truly distributed search in the vein of how Mastodon is distributed microblogging or Pixelfed is distributed Instagram or the like.
