i can't help but wonder, if the Democratic candidates and PACs wouldn't do better in US elections if they didn't consider a simple donation of $10 or less to be license to send the donor 4-6 money beg emails a day in perpetuity

it's exhausting and after a while it will entirely turn off voter enthusiasm.

Welp I was having a good weekend despite the fires in Los Angeles and the upcoming regime change and having eaten something Thursday that put me under the weather for a couple days and I was finally feeling a bit hopeful about turning things around with life and health and burnout

But then I caught up on mastodon and my feed is very very clear that these feelings were wrong and inappropriate and I'm supposed to feel guilty and stressed and continually aware that I have far more obligations than those I've fulfilled this week and having any relaxation is morally wrong so now I guess there I am

you know what's bananas? "open enrollment" is. you have to have a "qualifying life event" in order to change or update a health insurance policy.

it's wild that "I got sick and your benefits suck" isn't enough to make such a change. if it's auto or home insurance, and there is any event at all and their claims are dissatisfying, you can go to a rival[*]. that keeps most things from getting TOO egregious. health insurance? too bad, so sad.

then I thought about it and thought why should I spend a 1st-class stamp + paper + toner + envelope, to save them money on materials

A friend of mine's daughter just started teaching in primary school and is having a Time. She tells me what's in this BuzzFeed is pretty much what her daughter is encountering.

"COVID kids" she said. Unclear to me if that's her term or quoting her daughter; I think it's her own term. I didn't ask.

My takeaway is: phonics is important y'all. If you have kids, make sure they learn phonics

It'd be amazing if, after this US election, the "Republican" party splits into MAGA and whatever's left of relatively normal conservatives.

the new party would be more centrist; folks like Joe Manchin and Adam Kinzinger etc would feel comfortable there.

After a cycle of muddledness I think it would be clarifying. Dems could shift left, "Centrists" can be in the center, and MAGA will stop being conflated with right-of-center politics.

ANYHOW, this is bullshit.
