For those directly threatened, being quieter and not providing extra excuses for attack is perhaps wise, and certainly understandable.

Underground movements, underground railroads, revolutionary movements. In the 1900s, we had secret queer bars and hiding places/clubs when it was still illegal. It was a terrible situation but not being on social media and the web isn't the end of one's existence.

OK, but like -
the dude in the case used VPNs and Protonmail but neither of those services is what got him pegged - he used his gmail to commit the crimes and also his work laptop!
Sloppy opsec start to finish from someone who thought he was more clever than he was.
So in actuality, trusting a VPN (your text link) may be fine, just don't trust Google - an obviously compromised service, and don't use hardware owned by your employer!
