General reminder: Do not discuss your ✨ crimes ✨ on Fediverse. Every six seconds, some tech bro announces an extremely effective scraper and indexer for Fediverse and gets trounced for it.

Those are the ones we hear about.

No matter the privacy level you set for a post here, you should assume it's public in some capacity.

@EveHasWords What?

And I was just getting ready to tell folks about how a group of us knocked off the First Kurblesagle Bank in ‘13, embezzled $4.6M from the ArchBishop of FrappleStan in ‘15, and defiled a dozen farm animals out in the hinterlands of Vinaguess just last week!!

Why wouldn’t they want to scrape that list of sordid high-profile deeds?

For those of us with privilege (which may or may not include you) now very much the time to ratchet up our support and be ever more vocal and visible allies.

For those directly threatened, being quieter and not providing extra excuses for attack is perhaps wise, and certainly understandable.

And admitting illegal acts online is never wise unless you are explicitly inviting a response in civil disobedience.

@earthshine @EveHasWords There were activism and resistance before the internet. If the internet becomes generally unsafe to express your persecuted identity anywhere, then organise in real life. Underground movements, underground railroads, revolutionary movements. In the 1900s, we had secret queer bars and hiding places/clubs when it was still illegal. It was a terrible situation but not being on social media and the web isn't the end of one's existence.

In TrumpWorld, if you made a confession, they don't NEED to prove what you said.

If you wanna go to court to disprove what you 'confessed' to, it's your choice. And it's expensive. And you might not have enough money for bail—so you'd sit in jail while awaiting trial.

So if I were you, I wouldn't.

OK, but like -

the dude in the case used VPNs and Protonmail but neither of those services is what got him pegged - he used his gmail to commit the crimes and also his work laptop!

Sloppy opsec start to finish from someone who thought he was more clever than he was.

So in actuality, trusting a VPN (your text link) may be fine, just don't trust Google - an obviously compromised service, and don't use hardware owned by your employer!

I CONFESS.

In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max’s toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog…. When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I went nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out….

And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life.

@EveHasWords For more info about security culture i suggest the introduction blog post by the No Trace Project (in contrast to operational security, which is also important). Practicing security culture is just generally a good to habit, its not incriminating to want to protect yourself and others from fascists and authoritarians.

A Base to Stand On: Distinguishing OpSec and Security Culture

https://www.notrace.how/blog/a-base-to-stand-on/a-base-to-stand-on.html

Another important distinction to consider is to also not talk about activities you or others have done or plan to do which may be criminalized, but this update to the "two nevers" is problematic still too.
