[#]Today I got the one thing I absolutely had to do done already. I'm watching ExtraCuddlesBoy (the cat) handle his morning ablutions with his right ear inside-out. Listening to the air handler try to warm my tootsies (toes).

It's a calm, gentle start to the day.

General reminder: Do not discuss your ✨ crimes ✨ on Fediverse. Every six seconds, some tech bro announces an extremely effective scraper and indexer for Fediverse and gets trounced for it.

Those are the ones we hear about.

No matter the privacy level you set for a post here, you should assume it's public in some capacity.

ExtraScratchyBoy (the cat) started a conversation. I answered him. I thought he answered me. We had a whole thing going on. It turns out he was talking to ExtraCuddlesBoy and I was superfluous to the conversation.

Embarrassing.

Do not under any circumstances attempt to upgrade Ubuntu Studio 22. Failing to upgrade is actually the best case scenario. If you need the gory details, they are here. Be aware it gets quite angry and some of my opinions may not line up with yours.

If you're on a 22 LTS which isn't Studio, you may be fine. However, if you have installed any Python packages with pip, you are going to have a bad time. Python wants you to use venv for that stuff now and they're forcing the issue.

I have not found adequate advice on how to summon your scripts with venv on Linux without just launching the venv and calling them from inside that. I don't consider that a viable option. It's absurd to launch a venv every time you open a terminal window. I assume there is a way to do it. People are happy to talk about how with regard to Windows. I will find it eventually. If someone doesn't beat me to it in this thread, I will add whatever the advice is here when I have found it.

Did some β€œtroubleshooting” (aka following the instructions the installer provided and thus could have done itself) and now we’re going to grub and boot loop again to the tune of Madonna’s Like A Virgin. A bit faster this time. Will we have 24.01? Cliffhanger!

My main computer claims to have upgraded itself to LTS 24.01. It’s currently booting. On first boot, it progress bars approximately forever. A thing I know because LTS 24 is the first version LTS version I experienced that could not do an update without reimaging.

Currently in the goofy multiple partial reboots stage of things.

Assuming my computer does work at the end of this, it won’t persuade me to keep Ubuntu on this computer. The damage is done. I’m getting Mint.

As a note, I was mostly trying to reboot my computer and decided to let it do updates to save a redundant reboot. Turns out all the updates were part of something labeled as a system upgrade. Which turns out not to have installed 24.01. πŸ™„

Charging a "convenience" fee for someone paying you online is a crime (especially when a government does it). Why should I pay more for you to have fewer employees?

The #Microsoft #Edge people really don't want you to turn off the "news" they display you when you open it or a new tab. I put up with it for a while but they put too much low-quality click bait and I had enough.

This is a #TechGripe, not a request for troubleshooting assistance. I already figured out how to turn it off on my own. The issue is the behavior of a large tech company.

Not in a way that's obvious yet. In the Etiquette Empire, the Tikud have an interesting gender dynamic. The people who humans would perceive as "men" are typically pursued by those perceived as "women." (I think it's important to mention that western concepts of gender were invented specifically as a part of the colonial effort. There's no reason for us to be beholden to them let alone alien species. Thanks to Amazon, I'm somewhat limited in what I can do with that in a publishable work.)

There's a bit more going on with the Tikud and I'll explore it in future books. As a tease, Es'sheel pursuing women to join his retinue is considered transgressive. Him having relationships with other men isn't considered unusual or even interesting. The fact that one of his wives pursued and married a woman who herself has no relationship with the Emperor is also not unusual.

The humans have been living in a repressive regime, The Unconquered, until they were conquered by the Tikud. The Tikud are a less repressive regime but loyalists to the old state are still trying to enforce the mores of the Unconquered. In the military, the Unconquered see men and women as equals and they're expected to conform to strict rules about relationships. The Unconquered tolerate homosexuality as long as it isn't discussed openly. They have no tolerance for queerness or transness but what they are able to do while ruled by the Tikud is limited.

I'm chomping at the bit to talk about the Fezjh but it would be a spoiler for something that's probably going to happen at the end of book two so I'll leave that be for now.

I've mentioned a few times how ideas aren't the hard part when it comes to writing (or pretty much anything but writing is the one I do the most of). Got a brand new idea today.

I don't need a new idea. I need progress on existing projects. :blobcataww:

[#]WritersCoffeeClub January 25: Do you have a worked-out magical system (or advanced technology in sci-fi)? Or do you make it up as you go?

In general, if I expect it to be a longer work, I'll do some pre-work on it. I'm not keen to strongly pre-define magical or advanced technology systems. Not that there's anything wrong with doing that. It's just not my thing. I like to experience a certain amount of discovery with the characters. While doing enough planning to avoid massive re-writes.

I was a little unclear in a way that is probably going to rankle more than spawn curiosity.

Today, I find a lot of posts interesting and useful that I won't boost because they're lacking in one or more of the above elements.

Even if that improves, I see a potential benefit to having a digest of interesting / useful / important stuff that was posted on the fediverse with links to the original posts.

I'm tempted to create a daily digest of important information that came across my dash but which lacked needed references, tags, and/or media description.

One of the key problems is that I can't commit to doing that every day while I don't have an income. If I was to add links to Ko-Fi etc., I'd have to create a separate account for it because all the payment processors are absolute assholes about adult content creators.

Things I think about.

For some reason, I didn't set up a Section 31 filter. Possibly because it would have just been variations on Section 31, Georgiou, and Michelle Yeoh because I've done my best to avoid every bit of reportage I can on the thing.

I've not seen real spoilers on Mastodon but there are a lot of people with strongly negative opinions about it. Might have to hold off on watching it until I've successfully forgotten the tenor.

(I'm interested that they're playing with the Star Trek format. I'll happily watch Michelle Yeoh in just about anything. I have my doubts about the concept of a Section 31 movie. I don't need a bunch of other people's negative vibes going into it because I already brought my own. I'd like to give this a fair shake.)

[#]WordWeavers (Jan 23: In their world, is your MC more traditional or more interested in change?) January 24: What about your antagonist?

I had to think about this one because my erotica doesn't always include an antagonist. The current installment of Etiquette Empire does, though.

He doesn't have a name yet. I'm just getting to that part. He's at the level of society where it's not really a question of being traditional or interested in change. He's interested in things that let him keep power or gain more of it. In some moments, he'll appear to be "progressive" for his culture and in other moments he'll appeal to traditionalism.
