"... three round tables presented a thorough analysis of what the Zapatistas call “The Storm”, the transnational crisis and proxy wars to continue privatising land and stealing from the people to further the capitalist struggle.

... The “Table of Women” on the first day involved several Women commanders... They explained how Indigenous women work against patriarchal violence on a daily basis, with a focus on health, education, and the land.

... The next day Subcomandante Insurgente Moisés, in his presentation “Genealogy of the Zapatista Common”, talked about the historical development of dispossession, and how the land was organised as commons (el común) in his grandparents time.

... The presentation also raised the question of how each community can build its commons, either as workers, or as citizens of their own communities. ...

Insurgent Captain Marcos, formerly Subcomandante Marcos, gave a talk titled “The Watchtower: Signs towards tomorrow”. Here he directed a message to those across the pond (meaning us in Europe), focusing our attention on what the Zapatistas call “the day after”. This means getting ready for what happens when capitalism falls during the struggle, which the Zapatistas suggest will last for another 120 years or seven generations. "

the husks of demons are cast aside

both light and dark repel the corruption

two heroes in the blackness rise allied

How can you participate?

Submit a video (30-60 seconds) by January 17th telling us how a world free of state violence & war looks/feels/tastes/smells like for a school or learning environment. Submit the video by:

Sharing the video on instagram and tagging @saveweelaunee or @thehighlanderschoolatl

Emailing the video to woajanuary2025@proton.me

Get with your folks & make a plan! Then, tell us how you will be participating in the week of action!

Email us at woajanuary2025@proton.me with the subject “Week of Action” to let us know the following:

What will you be doing to participate in the week of action (i.e., will you be teaching a lesson on the ongoing conflict in the Congo, planning a student walkout, participating in a vision building exercise with fellow educators on building multilingual classrooms, circulating a petition amongst school staff to not call on SROs, supporting other student actions and encampments, etc.)

What city/state/location will this be taking place?

Should we post/share about your event?

If yes, can others in your locale participate with you? If yes, what is contact info for them to reach out and/or what should they know to participate–do you have a flyer or event link?

If yes, who should we tag? Are there any groups behind this that should be mentioned?

Share the resources that you plan on using so that we can share it with others!

If you have a plan for a certain lesson for the week of action, activity, teach-in, protest, or otherwise that you believe can be helpful for others, please share it with us! We will update this resource page below with that information.

In order to do so, email  woajanuary2025@proton.me with the subject line “Week of Action Resources.” Please include:

A link or attachment to the activity/lesson/etc.

It would be helpful if you let us know what age group it is for.

Any additional information to make this easy to use, including if there are supplementary texts, groups to reference, or videos/examples of it in action.

Share with the world how it’s going!

There’s power in knowing that many of us are in action! During the week of action, share photos, videos, flyers, or statements of solidarity with us on socials (thehighlanderschoolatl on IG and saveweelaunee on IG) or via email, woajanuary2025@proton.me  (let us know if you’re ok with us sharing with others, or if you prefer this to be between us!).

The Highlander School and the Weelaunee Coalition are calling for a week of action beginning January 18 and ending January 25, 2024.

As an organization born in MLK Jr’s birthplace, and the home of the fight to Stop Cop City that claimed our comrade, Tortuguita, on January 18th, and as educators and organizers moved to fight for the world our young people and ourselves deserve, we call upon all our relatives across the country & the world to bring our generation’s anti-war movement to their classrooms, schools, & communities.

This week of action is for those educators, students, parents/caregivers, & people of conscience who are moved to bring into practice reimagined education systems, methods of survival, and ways of knowing.
