@bazkie @nixCraft they were sluggish still, just because of another reason
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from ssekret@infosec.exchange
@ssekret @nixCraft I was being a bit snarky/salty.. because it feels so dumb that like 30 years after me seeing the first website, shit is still slow af.. 10000x more cpu power, but the same amount of inefficiently programmed browsers & sites 😬 it hurts!

I miss that “going online” was a thing that you specifically did for a set amount of time or for a set purpose. It felt special, a little bit of an adventure each time instead an all consuming and ever present.

@catsalad @nixCraft I’m out of the loop. What is wrong with Cloudflare? All I know is that they are a domain registrar and common public DNS.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from jesse@jelliefrontier.net
@jesse @catsalad @nixCraft AFAIK they've hosted and protected some pretty odious sites and people and tried to weasel out of responsibility by claiming they are pure infrastructure or similar

I miss when websites were unique and interesting. Everything nowadays is slick, professional, and made from a common set of building blocks. It objectively looks better, but old GeoCities sites were gloriously hideous. Every one was handcrafted in HTML (no CSS yet!) at a time when there were no standards or conventions, so every single one was original.
If a modern website is a chair from IKEA, a 1990s website is a chair someone made in their spare time from fresh lumber.

Efficiency & accessibility.
You'd anonymously visit a site (whether web, #Gopher, #WAIS, FTP), get just the raw content and could read it perfectly fine over a 1200 baud dial-up modem on a 286 running DOS.
Nowadays you need a web-browser that consumes GB of RAM when idle, a multi-core CPU clocked at GHz speeds, connected via an always-on 5G or fiber connection, and you get umptybajillion privacy-invading adverts and auto-playing videos in the process distracting you from the content you're trying to obtain.
Is it prettier? Maybe
Is it better? Hardly

@nixCraft The sense that we were at the beginning of something wonderful that was going to transform our society for the better. @nixCraft Discovery of new tech. There are some really really cool things out there from invention of the Raspberry Pi to open source self hosted services like Home Assistant; from the latest version of your favourite Linux distro to cyber security applications etc, its all cool stuff but that feeling of 'discovery' of say the 'terminal' for the first time & how it could be used for things like Mutt email or IRC messaging to communicate with other 'across the world' cannot be replicated.

@nixCraft I remember fondly the impact CUSeeMe had on me for the first time. After over an hour of fiddling, our buddy Ron and I had a video conversation in a postage-stamp sized greyscale window. It floored me because I could see what the future was going to be. I still feel a sense of wonder at what we can do today but nothing has hit me like that first time.
