Ok #Fediverse friends, What mastodon / Pleroma relay servers are you using on your instances ?

I'm hoping to pull in more tech, retrocomputing, BSD stuff etc for my #snac instance.

Please boost this and thank you. ❤️

I'm following about 7 hashtags using the new #snac hashtags follow setup. My relay has registered and I see content in the relay but on this user justine I haven't yet noticed any posts with the hashtags that I'm following appear in my feed only ones that mutuals have boosted or commented on.

I'll give it a day and see if this changes over time. 🤔

Right I've add the user relay to my #snac server and followed https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com and it seems to be working I think according to the instructions here:

https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2/src/commit/468b7a38885152cb2d61537abfdd9a4cda9c847a/doc/snac.8#L587

I've followed the #FreeBSD hashtag for now and will see what happens. One thing that does come to mind is that you now have a user called relay that doesn't actually seem to do much other than follow the actors ????

Do I now have to follow my relay or is this something that the snac server takes care of ???

Also is it a good idea or can the relay user follow multiple relay actors ??

Going to add a relay server to my #snac instance so that I can follow hashtags and then I'm maybe going to look into installing a #GeminiCapsule in a #FreeBsd #Bastille jail just because and experience using Molly Brown. 🤔

Is there a online petition to get the UK government to reconsider the UK #OnlineSafetyAct as at the moment they are forcing loads of innocent website, forum, fediverse maintainer's and self hosters to consider having to shut down. Yes I understand why they are doing it as folk do need protecting but I feel they need to rethink things first as it could be destroying the web as we know it. It seems to me that the UK is fast becoming a nanny state.

[ Edit ] It seems the no politics rule has been removed since yesterday.

Hmmm was going to subscribe to https://fedi-

relay.gyptazy.com/ on my #snac server but there is one rule that even though I hardly post about might get my instance removed. It says "No political related content" but occasionally ( very rare ) I will boost a toot that I agree with to do with politics or make a random moan about our government but that too is rare. Mostly it's tech related and life. I totally agree with @gyptazy@gyptazy.com rules, it's just that politics that might catch me out ? So I guess I better go look for other relays like Intahnet.

When you try to edit a post and tag someone else but it doesn't show as a link so you delete the post and try again but nothing.

Turns out their mastodon user or instance is no more. Oh well lesson learned. Check first. 🙃

Found a bug in #snac where it would give a 404 error if I entered my base URL instead of showing the greeting.html page. Started thinking I'd messed up my nginx reverse proxy config somehow but couldn't see anything wrong. So decided to bypass the reverse proxy and use curl on my snac instance to prove that it was snac that was the issue. Anyway reported and a fix has been found by another snac user @anzu@livellosegreto.it which I tested and @grunfink@comam.es pushed an update.

Proof that reporting issues and testing with the devs does indeed help.

The now closed issue is below.

And just like that it's back up.

Has anyone else noticed that https://cgit.freebsd.org/

has been down for a while now ? #FreeBSD

Well I'm still daily driving #KornShell aka oksh after getting 20 plus years used to bash and I'm really liking using it. I can honestly say it's a work in progress but I'm learning as I go along and loving it. This feels unixy to me. #RunBSD #FreeBSD

Resolved my issue with my git ssh-askpass.sh asking for passwords 2 to 3 times when running the oksh shell. Turns out I had to move these two lines from .kshrc to .profile and everyone is happy again for now. Worked fine in bash being in .bashrc but hey ho. Everyday is a school day, And to think I was going to throw the towel in on ksh. 😃

Hmmm first issue I've found whilst testing oksh in place of bash. I use a script ssh-askpass.sh with my git repos which works fine under bash and it remembers the password for a while as it should. But under oksh it asks multiple times for the password before accepting it.

The script is POSIX compliant according to shellcheck but maybe oksh doesn't like something ?

Switched my shell from bash after 20 plus years to oksh to see how I get on with this ksh variant. So far so good and I'm having to read the man page to get my self used to a slightly different way of doing things but this does feel nice and Unixy as I said earlier. Only time will tell if I switch back. 😉 #FreeBSD #Unix #Bash #KSH #OKSH #OpenBSD

In other news I'm back on the diet. I want to lose at least 1 stone before my holiday at the end of the year. I did this once before and got to my set target of 10 stone 8 and I can do it again. The issue is sticking to it for more than 6 months.

Just found that you can do custom tab completions in oksh too.

Looking at shells for interactive use as I've been using Bash since the beginning. I did look at #FreeBSD default sh but it's history is a tad clunky. Yesterday I was introduced to oksh a public domain Korn shell via a blog by @rubenerd@bsd.network and it does look interesting. I'd obviously continue writing my scripts to be posix compliant and running with sh but for interactive use this might be more me ?

Only one way to find out and that's to read up and try it I suppose. Feel free to chime in if you use oksh AKA korn shell.

I've finally worked out why I had to add ip alias lines like ifconfig_re0_alias0="inet 192.168.0.46 netmask 255.255.255.0" into my /etc/rc.conf on my #HomeLab #FreeBSD server to give my Bastille jails internet access. It turns out that I was creating jails using doas bastille create test1 14.2-RELEASE 192.168.0.48/24 which gave the jail the bastille0 loop back as the main interface. Appending my network interface like so doas bastille create test1 14.2-RELEASE 192.168.0.48/24 re0 resolved the issue and now I can delete all those aliases from my /etc/rc.conf.

Every day is a school day here.
