Toot

Written by mitten on 2025-01-10 at 19:05

I'm looking for some new music to listen to while I work. I just don't know what to call the stuff I'm looking for. Cheerful ambient?? Superchill electronic?? No lyrics. Not too moody. Not too oonz oonz (but a little beat is okay). Not too sleepy, but not too peppy either. Doesn't have to be electronic - acoustic is fine, too.

Can anybody help me put a genre name to this kind of thing? Or better yet, point me at some artists and/or albums?

Oh my gosh - thank you all so much for all the replies. I've already had a chance to listen to some of your recommends, and will listen to more of them in the upcoming days. My ears are so happy right now!

Green-House has a couple other albums if you like that, my second favorite is “Six Songs for Invisible Gardens”

@mitten Try Groove Salad on soma.fm

Electronic Ambient is a thing. Soma FM is an internet radio site with lots of different stations but Groove Salad is a pretty reliable choice.

Also, Ive found that Trip-Hop as a genre is pretty good. I like Pandora's selection of trip hop artists (Morcheeba, Portishead, Thievery Corporation, etc.)

@mitten Also, this is more specific to me, but I find that video game music - especially for open world RPGs tends to be energizing without being distracting (Valheim and World of Warcraft as examples).

@mitten I listen to this kind of music at work. After reading this article (https://harpers.org/archive/2025/01/the-ghosts-in-the-machine-liz-pelly-spotify-musicians/) I am working on listening to albums by specific known artists rather than a streaming service's "Lo Fi Beats" playlist that may be all mass-created content by ghost artists.

A lot of Sigur Ros is good for this, I also like Shigeto's album "No Better Time Than Now"

@mitten I am a decade late to this party (but so were the Grammy noms, ha) but Khruangbin ("crum-bin"): vibey grooves with world-music tinged, reverb-y guitar

@mitten “Downtempo” was (is?) a genre of lower energy electronica from the 90s and 00s that meets your criteria. I did a lot of work with that in my ears.

@mitten are you looking in order to label it? Or are you looking to find a source for that sort of music?

If it's the latter, and you don't already know them, check out Groove Salad or Lush channels on soma.fm (and, if you like them, like I do, then I encourage supporting them just like a public radio station).

I've mostly just listened to soma for a while and then found someone interesting to track down, and then find out who's adjacent to them.

Is anyone already on your list?

@mitten

As for specific artists (maybe yes, maybe no; as always YMMV) I think Eric Hilton might be the kind of thing you're looking for:

https://erichilton.bandcamp.com/

Air is still another good one for me, though maybe they're overplayed for some people

Tagging @cstanhope who has posted some good recommendations I've followed (particularly for flagging Eric Hilton solo work to my attention)

Like I said, if you have a couple you already like, that can help triangulate suggestions.

@Cornellbox @mitten Eric Hilton is always a good choice. :)

I don't know an appropriate genre, and I don't know if these are what you're looking for, but here's some artists that come to mind (not all ambient):

https://soundvision.bandcamp.com/album/on-lunar-fields

https://posy.bandcamp.com/album/segmented-segments

https://alexball.bandcamp.com/album/sproing

https://bluetech.bandcamp.com/album/holotrope

https://tipper.bandcamp.com/album/jettison-mind-hatch

https://transversales.bandcamp.com/album/golden-apples-of-the-sun-3

Hania Rani is super awesome (she has some lyrics, but in a way that I somehow don't find distracting):
