In more mundane #rstats notes, I'm gonna submit a new version of janitor to CRAN with a single cherry picked from the main branch to satisfy a failing test on CRAN.

"How hard could this be? " he asks, fearing this will be a multi-hour submission process

Hey #rstats folks: the janitor 📦 team is in the process of splitting off the tabyl() function and its friends into a new package. If you're interested in that or have input, let us know: https://github.com/sfirke/janitor/issues/240

335 hours of podcast listening is a lot but feels accurate. I wonder if I ought to leave more space for my own thoughts.

Outstanding that #AntennaPodEcho does the same thing as #SpotifyWrapped but on your phone to respect your privacy. All the fun without the surveillance!

Update: I flipped over the bucket and pressed the block out. The former top was well frozen -- now that's the bottom in this picture -- but the core and the now-top are still water. Wild!

Hopefully it will finish freezing now that it's inverted and exposed to the elements.

I filled up a kitty litter bucket with 5 gallons of cold water and set it outside this morning. It's partially frozen now. Tomorrow after school the kids and I are gonna try our hand at ice carving!

I have a rotary tool (off-brand Dremel) and a bunch of tips for it, one of them has to work, right?

There's a phrase in American English "borrow a cup of sugar" describing neighbors lending to each other. Anyone know a phrase like that in other languages or other dialects of English? What else do people stereotypically borrow?

Boosts welcome 🔁

And I'm thankful to have done this at a top-notch hospital only a couple of miles from home! Michigan Medicine workers - staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and most of all the nurses - were talented and kind without exception.

I've been unsure when to share this news. It felt premature to talk about it during initial screening. And it's an odd thing to drop in a conversation.

I plan to blog about it, my preferred way to reach people who are interested in my doings. But that won't be ready for a while, I'm tired. And in the meantime some of you knew I was doing this and have wondered how things are.

Things are good! I am happy. Thanks for the well-wishes.

Personal health update: I donated my left kidney to a stranger on Wednesday morning! My recovery has been smooth so far. I went home from the hospital the next afternoon. I'm gaining strength and mobility and no longer need narcotic painkillers.

Meanwhile my former kidney flew to LA and is busy filtering its new owner's blood!

I'm lucky to have good health and help from family and friends to make this endeavor possible.

DJ's Landscaping (Ann Arbor schools mowing contractor) has a driverless mower doing the big flat athletic field at Slauson middle school. Looks like its overseer draws a boundary on a tablet and it mows back and forth inside that.

I want to run simple data quality checks on Pandas DFs during my ETL processes. If they fail, they should either halt the process with an error or send me a warning email, as I choose. Is there a library I should look at using or extending?

Great Expectations seems too complicated. Pandera is promising but I don't see that it could do the email alert component - can it?

Boosts welcome #pydata #python

Important point re: knowledge preservation and conversation on the web. I contribute to #ApacheSuperset, the leading open-source BI software (think Tableau but free) and hang out in the project's Slack helping newbies.

It's arbitrary whether people post their questions in Slack or GitHub Discussions. This makes me wonder if we should push more activity to Discussions where it is open to the public and indexed by search engines.

Say an open source project has sets of message translations into many languages. What's a system for keeping those up to date as the main set of English messages constantly change? Looking for an article or documented example.

All I can think of is recruiting bilingual contributors, and then as part of a version release, a tool would generate a list of messages that have been added or changed and give them a template to review and edit. But I don't know how to make that happen. #oss
