Pressure from employees at tech and social media companies has been one of the few things that has been effective in getting these companies to change their policies. What you do, what you say, and what you agree to build in these times matters a lot.

@evacide my experience has been that you can exhaust yourself trying to resist these top-down policies from within, and then they happen anyway. We can't rely on employees for change, especially as it tends to land on the shoulders of the most vulnerable employees to resist.

@RubyJones @evacide Your are correct. Change (Real change) does not happen from the bottom, it happens from the top. If people at the top are not on board, good luck.

@evacide @silfra Yeah, I would not agree at all that real change only happens from the top - that's not at all what I said and sounds like defeatist, dangerous crap. But if you want change, relying on employees within a company to do it is risky and risks vulnerable people. Regulation and in this case adequate laws against hate speech that support trans people, are really important in supporting employees.

@evacide Don't really agree. Look at what happened with Twitter. Plenty revolted. Musk fired huge numbers and just kept firing even at the expense of the stability of the platform. Plenty of people who thought it was going to crash outright for lack of engineers to maintain it. He ultimately just kept firing until he had a tractable workforce that would do what he wanted. I very much doubt Facebook will be any different.

@evacide Same with Microsoft or Google, when they've been taking homeland security money or AI project for Israel. Are there a few people who will refuse to implement and hold a sit-in protest in some executive's office? Sure, but then they get fired and someone more tractable fills their place.

Tech workers have been, by and large, ineffective at shaping corporate culture and getting their companies to not get involved in objectionable shit.

@evacide @Infoseepage people are speaking up, and then getting comments removed for violating policy. That comes with a mark on your record and will get you removed. Even commenting about the comments getting deleted gets you a demerit. Observing types of people saying things as well. The mods say that internal comments aren't allowed to create uncomfortable work space, which is different than public discussions

It's uncomfortable to be surrounded

Its not as unanimous as this article says.

@evacide@hachyderm.io @Infoseepage@mastodon.social Twitter was unique because Elon had a ton of money and simply didn't care. He was forced into buying Twitter (by his own stupidity). Mark has spent over decade trying to keep Facebook and Meta going. So there’s a very real chance that if they feel pushback from advertisers, journalists and so on that they might fold. I don’t think Mark is going to kill off his platforms to appease a man who can’t be elected again (after this term).

@puppygirlhornypost2 @evacide People made that argument about Twitter too and advertisers did leave and the company is worth a fraction of what it once was, but that didn't stay Musk's hand. Maybe Zuckerberg has other considerations, but he's absolutely chosen to align Facebook with Trump and let it be used as a platform to spread hate.

@Infoseepage@mastodon.social @evacide@hachyderm.io not denying that - just stating that Elon didn’t spend years building up a social media site. Look at how he fangirls Trump. Elon is a conman who has made a bunch of stupid moves, he was already a grifter. More importantly, for their personal longterm emotional wellbeing, people should not want to work for and enable a company with such policies and such impact. So complain and complain until you are either fired or the policy changes.

People doing things for money that are diametrically opposed to their and common values is what makes capitalism so destructive, especially in tech as it impact is so wide and deep.

and only walked it back later on, after the backlash that we're seeing now. The EFF still wrote a praising (cautious optimism? either way - positive sentiment) article for meta based on a PR release that they were reducing their moderation efforts - despite meta's abysmal track record - which is just wild
