I would say that the US is moving into "the law doesn't matter, only the President's whim matters" territory faster than I expected, but this is about on schedule.

Wired is just a couple of steps ahead of me in figuring out what does and does not work for getting around the US TikTok ban. https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-get-around-the-us-tiktok-ban/

The TikTok ban has started.

You can still access TikTok content if you use a VPN to make it look like you're outside of the US, but if you have a US account, you will not be able to login.

I would like for all of this to end in the repeal of the TikTok ban, but it's almost certainly going to end with Trump negotiating the sale of US TikTok as a gift to one of his cronies, which is why Elon and Zuck are elbowing each other so hard right now.

I see that some of you are still saying that "You can't yell fire in a crowded theater" when you're arguing about the First Amendment. Please stop that and read this:

Or don't read it and I will continue to use the phrase as a sign that you don't know what you're talking about and I can shrug and block you.

Well, it's all gone down the way we expected: SCOTUS has upheld the TikTok ban, using reasoning that makes it very clear they either don't understand data flows or don't actually care about protecting the data of US users.

TikTok has said they will start blocking access to US accounts on Sunday.

I spent most of a decade traveling to authoritarian countries and teaching people how to circumvent internet censorship. I am appalled that this is now something I have to do in the US.

For people who are wondering what the TikTok ban is going to look like for US TikTok users if it goes into effect on Sunday, TikTok will be blocking US users, linking to info about the ban, and giving them the option of exporting their data. https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/15/24344299/tiktok-shutdown-us-ban-supreme-court

You will be shocked to discover that I am not a fan of the UAE and I have opinions about the way they've been throwing money around the tech sector in Silicon Valley, trying to buy influence and legitimacy.

Lots of folks in my mentions going "Haha, the US will just ban VPNs," possibly because they are not experts in internet censorship and they have not been watching this exact same dynamic play out in dozens of countries over the last 20 years.

After all of the infosec chatter about how you probably don't need a VPN, age verification has made PornHub block access in most Southern states and TikTok's about to block US IPs. We are entering a new age of internet censorship and you might need a non-shady VPN.

Pressure from employees at tech and social media companies has been one of the few things that has been effective in getting these companies to change their policies. What you do, what you say, and what you agree to build in these times matters a lot.
