Hi, Mastodon peeps,
I have my next blog post ready.
In November I set out on a philosophical journey for perspective on today's politics.
When I started this series, I switched to monthly instead of weekly because these posts take so long to write.
I'm ready early, so I think my new schedule will be "whenever it's finished."
I always post here first because I can count my mastodon friends to point out my mistakes :) I don't like having mistakes in my blog posts.

My reason for this approach:
Coming at current politics through the lens of political and legal philosophy gives people a way to talk about what is happening which doesn't trigger "is this good for my team" responses.
It gives us a framework for thinking about (and discussing) the issues.

@Teri_Kanefield link doesn't seem to work?

@Cyclist That's the error that happens on Mastodon if too many people click at once. I thought that was fixed. About a year ago I was told that uploading a picture helps, and I forgot to do that.
See if it works now. thanks.

@Teri_Kanefield I see what you did there, "Read my post, I challenge you to find a mistake". And there's always a mistake.
But you task me to read your content, and I will 😎

@Teri_Kanefield The natural vs positive law stuff makes me think of Mangione. And the hyper-partisan stuff aligns with the fact that those who disagree with committing violence like that assume those praising him belong to “them” rather than “us.” I’ve seen leftists, centrists, and far rightists all blamed for supporting him. Which I think actually shows how broad support for taking action against greedy health insurance companies is!

@queenofnewyork I almost included that example but I didn't have enough information, just a poll that said most people who thought the killing was justified were young people.

@Teri_Kanefield Which is also not true, at least in my experience. Though if there are %s at play it could also lean to the fact that people don’t really get conservative as they get older, but the more liberal tend to be the most oppressed, who are less likely to survive to old age.

@queenofnewyork that's why I didn't include the example.
But your comment is why I think that this is the best approach. Coming at current politics through the lens of political and legal philosophy gives people a way to talk about what is happening which doesn't trigger "is this good for my team" responses.

@Patb thank you! I am not near them at all, but my stepdaughter, who lives in LA was on close watch for a while. The fires near her have been put out.
Thank you for asking.

@Teri_Kanefield This is probably not your fault, but I would not apostrophize god.

@Teri_Kanefield Beautiful piece of writing. One small correction: "When Trump won in November of 2024, this time with a (slim) majority of the votes and a clear electoral college victory..."
Trump won a plurality but he barely missed getting a majority. California took a couple of weeks to count the votes, so you may have seen early, incomplete numbers.

Thank you, I always appreciate a somewhat different and nuanced perspective on today's issues. I tend towards nature's laws and need the reminder that not everyone holds what I think is right, and I can somewhat understand why many folks are afraid of change and progress.

@Teri_Kanefield I particularly appreciate the point about people who fear change and people who think more is needed. That's the definite breakdown in my family.

@Teri_Kanefield Brilliant. Thoughtful. Love the use of Antigone, which I read as a sophomore in high school and completely missed the nuance then, through no fault of my teacher. It's helpful to get your perspective on the Trump voters and those who did not vote. I have personally been in utter shock, disbelief, and disappointment - it doesn't mean I've given up, but the process back from shock takes time and warm cups of broth or tea to recover, reassess, and map out a different path based on a reality I didn't fully grasp. If we're lucky here, and not players in an actual Greek tragedy, it's only fatal to be mistaken if we don't face and learn from our mistakes. I hope we still have some luck left.
Thanks, again.

I understand why "MPIA" might be appealing, but at this point I kind of yearn for the days when politics was routine and outwardly boring. There's something very appealing about the government just running along so that you don't need to spend most of the time concerned over the latest political news/post. Yes, you can dig into various legislation which is interesting in a nerdy kind of way, but if all of Congress, the judiciary, and the executive branch honored their oaths to the Constitution etc., and worked together for the good of the country rather for their own personal gain, that would be very nice.
A really good first step would be reverse Citizens United and its predecessors and get the money out of politics so that some unelected rich guy like Musk can't buy one of the major parties and the presidency.

@Teri_Kanefield Thank you for your insight!
In my not-remotely-expert opinion, there seems to be another group of Trump voter: those who didn't believe Democrat claims that "actually everything is fine, actually inflation is under control," and between Trump's disrupting lies and Harris's keep-the-status-quo lies, went for disruption.

from the proofread late Sunday night:
apostrophized plural typo: what the god's hold dear
factual error: more importantly, Democrats received 8 million fewer votes in 2024 than 2020.
The difference is 6.3 mil votes, not 8 mil.
2024 Harris: 75.009 million votes. source: https://decisiondeskhq.com/results/2024/General/President/
2020 Biden: 81.283 million votes. source: Federal Election Commission https://www.fec.gov/resources/cms-content/documents/federalelections2020.pdf

@Teri_Kanefield I love a good Antigone post!
I seem to recall that the text of the play claims that the gods were visiting punishment upon the city while the brother was unburied, lending weight to Antigone's perspective. While we don't have the same relationship with religion that the original audience did, leaving that out feels incomplete.
It's also been nearly two decades since I read the play, so I may be totally wrong or mixing things up with the two Oedipus-focused plays.
