Good morning Mastodon peeps.

I can't tell if I am finished with my latest blog post, or just ready to abandon it.

https://terikanefield.com/democracy-oligarchy-and-tyranny/

It's called Democracy, Oligarchy , and Tyranny.

As coincidence would have it, as I was reading Book VIII of The Republic and considering a blog post about the interplay of democracy and oligarchy when Biden gave a speech warning Americans of a rising oligarchy.

Do your thing, Mastodon. (I know you'll kindly tell me if I made a mistake!)

My reason for this approach:

Coming at current politics through the lens of political and legal philosophy gives people a way to talk about what is happening which doesn't trigger "is this good for my team" responses.

It gives us a framework for thinking about (and discussing) the issues.

Hi, Mastodon peeps,

I have my next blog post ready.

In November I set out on a philosophical journey for perspective on today's politics.

When I started this series, I switched to monthly instead of weekly because these posts take so long to write.

I'm ready early, so I think my new schedule will be "whenever it's finished."

I always post here first because I can count my mastodon friends to point out my mistakes :) I don't like having mistakes in my blog posts.

Hi, Mastodon Peeps,

I have my blog post ready.

Last month, I talked about a philosophical journey for perspective on today’s politics.

Plato is always a good place to start.

I’ll also talk about TV lawyers and the spirit of liberty because . . . it follows.

An election happened since my last blog post, so I’ll have a bit about that as well. I also included a section on what to expect moving forward.

Question: is this the reason MSNBC rankings are reportedly cratering?

I assume there is another reason because the cratering started just after the election. I figured was one reason was simply that news talk shows were painful to watch after the election. People needed to hide for a while.

Adding: The reason I think the way it is generally taught is boring is that it's watered down and people are not given context.

I saw a kids book once that said, "you have the right to a jury trial!" Why would a kid care?

But after you read about the Zenger trial in the American colonies juries make sense as a way for the people to resist a tyrant.

Someone asked the age level.

I wrote at the same level I wrote for California appellate justices 😂

Okay, it's the level just before kids start reading adult-level books.

So anyway, I had this idea that everyone, particularly young people, should learn what is taught in law school.

I also had the idea that the way it is taught to young people is boring.

It wasn't until law school that I realized how interesting this stuff is.

The result ⤵️

Why build an ordinary sukkah when you can build a gorgeous one?

My favorite holidays are all in the fall.

Halloween because I like the subversiveness of kids demanding candy and being whatever they wish.

Sukkot because I love the idea of a temporary shelter to remind us of life's fragility and to gather family and friends.

Day of the Dead because South Americans get it right.

I miss you all! I plan to start blogging against next month.

More greetings from southern Chile (Pucon)

To quote my brother-in-law, "We have everything here! Big earthquakes. Big fires. Big volcanoes."

Signs remind people to run if the volcano erupts. I asked if people really need to be told that. Brother in law: "Yes. Chileans will stop to take pictures."

The beach has black lava sand.

Greetings from the south part of Chile.

One reason for my social media / blogging sabbatical is a visit to Chile for a sibling reunion (husband's sibs) and the Chilean independence festivals.

I met a woman wearing traditional dress and I asked if I could get a picture with her. All of her friends wanted to jump into the picture.

I asked permission to share and they were delighted.

More pictures coming.

(Can you spot the gringa?)

Yes that's a volcano in the background.

When I taught fiction writing at the college and university level before law school (yes I did that ) I used to tell my classes that characters need to get what they deserve but in unexpected ways.

Trump will not only be beaten by a woman, he will be beaten by a woman who is not white.

One more: My favorite lines from the entire convention came from Michelle Obama (why is that not a surprise?)

I did a screenshot because the text won't fit.

"The affirmative action of generational wealth" was perfect.

Another detail worth noting: I liked Harris’s use of the word "unserious."

She said something like, "In many ways Trump is an unserious person, but the consequequences of a second presidency would be devastating."

"Unserious" succeeds the way understatements succeed. An accurate statement "buffoon" would sound like hyperbole and would come across like namecalling. "Unserious" is descriptive and understated.

The "again" in "MAGA" creates a reactionary / regressive manifesto.

"We are not going back" is the perfect counter-slogan. While Harris laid out a progressive agenda, "We're not going back" invites traditional conservatives (who are not reactionary) to feel comfortable.

One of my favorite lines so far: "We need a president who shatters the boundaries of what is possible, not a president who shatters the boundaries of what is legal."

My political statment for the day: Toilet paper is free in schools and elsewhere, so tampons and sanitary napkins should be free.

Adding: I know, I'm a dangerously radical liberal.
