The Employment Relations (Pay Deductions for Partial Strikes) Amendment Bill should be abandoned. The whole point of a democratic government is to represent the interests of the people, including defending them from the interests of businesses. The government should therefore not be making laws that shift the balance of power even more toward employers than it already is.

I strongly oppose the Employment Relations (Pay Deductions for Partial Strikes) Amendment Bill. The balance of power between employees and employers is inherently biased in favour of employers. This bill would make it worse by undermining the rights of employees, and the negotiating power of unions, which would cause more problems than it would solve.

The fact that this question is being put forth for public consultation at all, suggests to me that you’re deliberately targeting a small, vulnerable group with discrimination now, to see if you can get away with normalising government interference on medical questions for other, larger groups later. Which is quite a surprise coming from a coalition government where at least a third of you purport to want more individual liberties and less government regulation.

which means not restricting prescribers to a smaller subset of the doctors who can currently prescribe them.
More broadly, regardless of how anyone feels about the existence of trans people, all decisions about all medications should be between the patient and their doctor(s). The government and general public should have no part of the decision making process.

Insofar as puberty blockers already have guidelines and restrictions in place to ensure that they are prescribed appropriately for all children who need them, there is no need to add further regulations on their use for trans children in particular. All children who need them - trans or otherwise - should have equal access regardless of where they live in Aotearoa New Zealand,

Since I'm on a roll tonight, I went ahead and turned in my submission on the Regulatory Standards Bill as well (that's this one, due Jan 13: https://www.regulation.govt.nz/our-work/regulatory-standards-bill/). I had a lot more to say about it than most of the other submissions so I won't repost it all here, but it's available for people to read (go ahead and steal my ideas if you don't have any!): https://nerwengreen.dreamwidth.org/113602.html

I oppose the social security amendment bill. Punishing the poor for being poor does not make them magically become gainfully employed, societally contributing taxpayers. Sapping their already limited resources and energy on pointless bureaucratic hoops would actually leave them less able to pursue gainful employment.

Furthermore, if the goal of the government is to reduce youth offending, might I point out that an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Restore (and increase!) funding to programmes like Family Start, which do more to provide youth with a solid foundation toward becoming good citizens than beating them in a military boot camp ever would.

The Oranga Tamariki (Responding to Serious Youth Offending) Amendment Bill should be abandoned. The government should focus on ensuring all changes recommended in the Abuse of State Care Inquiry report.

The bill about putting youth offenders into a military academy where "reasonable physical force" is allowed: https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/make-a-submission/document/54SCSSC_SCF_58C619F0-9C1F-4CE0-DF81-08DD076D450C/oranga-tamariki-responding-to-serious-youth-offending
I oppose the Oranga Tamariki (Responding to Serious Youth Offending) Amendment Bill. New Zealand has laws against parents disciplining their children through physical force. Why should this be allowed just because it's a government official doing the disciplining?

Bearing in mind the basic tenet that the purpose of the economy is to see to the wellbeing of the people and natural environment, I propose a housing crisis fix that maximises benefit to the wellbeing of local communities:
Step One:
Everyone who lives in a house they don’t own, that has lived there for more than two years, automatically becomes the owner of said house.

The Principles of the Treaty Bill should be abandoned. If the originators of this bill are so opposed to co-governance between Crown and Māori, perhaps consider that by all rights, it should be the Māori who are the entire government.

Putting together my Treaty Principles submission. Coming from the U.S. where nobody cares what I think, I've decided to go the direct and extreme route of saying exactly what I think:
I strongly oppose the Principles of the Treaty Bill. It is a bad faith attempt to remove Māori from having a voice in our government by undermining the founding document of the nation. If it was a more overt attempt, it could arguably be defined as treason.

If I was in a position to explain the economic benefits of something to justify doing it, I'd start with "the purpose of the economy is to see to the wellbeing of the people, our communities, and the natural environment" and proceed from that.
