@ghostinthenet "Call for price" is another word for "enterprise service", which in turn is a synonym for very expensive, complex, and royal pain to work with.

@pzriddle Made me chuckle. 🙂 My issue is less about calling in the first place and more about wasting my time with an inescapable sales process.

Actually, if there’s not a prominent button in the main nav for pricing I move on. The REASON for a website should not be obfuscated.

@ghostinthenet When I transitioned from network engineer to sales engineer I learned that you’re not the customer they’re looking for. The web site is working.

@jefftp I’m sure it is. If they’re so super-special that they can dismiss potential customers (and the consultants who advise them) based on the customers’ willingness to participate in a bloated sales process, I’m happy to leave them to their specialness. There are better companies to deal with.

Me too. Suggests the price is volatile and they can't be bothered updating the site or they're looking to 'bargain' by quoting something stupid on the phone then because of whatever made up reason they're going to offer you a discount so you'll feel better about being ripped-off.

@pthane @Maker_of_Things That’s the feeling I get too. If there’s no transparency in the pricing, they’re worried that it’s going to scare off the customer before the sales reps have had a chance to reposition the product as reassuringly expensive rather than just unnecessarily expensive. This does not bode well for the likelihood of transparency in further business dealings with the company and should be treated as a red flag.

@pthane
It bugs me with trade sites. Sometimes I just need to look up a price as I am quoting for a client, or I just need to know if a change in spec would still be within budget.
Instead I have to log in, select my store, add items into the basket, change the store because an item is out of stock, start again, etc. just to get a price based on how valued a trade customer I am.
I often end up just looking at retail prices and the client deciding they can't afford the job, without knowing that once I have the job and start ordering stuff, the job could become 25-30% cheaper on materials.
Yes, the discount benefits me, but only if it can also benefit my client enough that they give me the job in the first place!
And I hate negotiating discounts with sales people.

@pthane @ghostinthenet @Maker_of_Things they play all sorts of games with prices. Even when you are asking for bids from a government agency with strict rules, they will quote high then try to haggle when it is too late. I've had vendors nearly halve a price when they find out you got bids from other vendors.
Recently a couple vendors won't even show what they have in stock like they used to. They want you to call for "better customer experience." Well, I'm designing a system and need to know what sizes you sell before I can even finish a preliminary design. They didn't appreciate the large number of emails back and forth as I tried to optimize a design, when I used to just copy paste tables from their catalog into an optimization routine.

@ghostinthenet @SecurityWriter A legit reason that disqualifies vendors when I’m shopping for my work. I assume they’ll try to jack up the price as much as they think the customer will pay, which I just don’t want to deal with.
