Seems I was prescient to be switching many of my customers to equipment from non-US networking vendors. I suspect this will be accelerating. #NetEng

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always thought that border control was each country’s own responsibility. If we’re going to get tariffed because we allegedly haven’t stopped people and drugs from coming into the US via Canada, perhaps we should inform the US government that the retaliatory tariffs won’t come off until they stop firearms from crossing into Canada via the US. #JustSayin #CdnPol

There’s been a lot of talk of folks ditching #Facebook these days. Given some of #Meta’s corporate decisions, I totally get that and am highly tempted to stop being a part of their cattle herd, but they’re insidious and I have too many connections that I’d like to keep.

So, I’ve removed their apps from my phone and will try to post links to my #Fediverse posts instead of direct content. That’ll make them do a little work to harvest my data, subtly (okay, maybe blatantly) suggest that people come over here instead, and possibly bypass their content censorship. Let’s see what happens.

It •does• seem to get around a fair bit of FB’s censorship. That’s a thing.

Is it passive-aggressive to use links back to my #Fediverse posts for all of my cross-posts to non-Fediverse platforms? Asking for a friend.

I think we’ve reached a point where the question is no longer “What benefit do I gain by building my networks with #IPv6 enabled?” but “What restrictions do we have that require us to omit it?”

There’s a life lesson that we all learn repeatedly and seem to need reminding of equally repeatedly: If we don’t have •constructive• input for a situation, we have •no• input. In that situation, adding our comments is just grandstanding. Nobody cares.

Way to pad consultants’ pockets there Gartner. We just migrated 30 VMs from VMWare to Hyper-V over a weekend… and didn’t even need additional hardware. (Yes, I know more complex installations will be more involved.) #VMware #HyperV #Gartner https://it.slashdot.org/story/25/01/21/1615241/vmware-migrations-will-be-long-expensive-and-risky-warns-gartner

If an entry-level position requires experience, don’t call it an entry-level position. You’re setting the wrong expectations and driving potential applicants away. Worst of all, you’re saying the quiet part (that your organization places no value in training its employees) out loud. #Careers

The right to privacy is a bit like copyright. If we don’t defend it, we lose claim to it. Every time I see a Facebook user post a proclamation that Meta has no rights to the content that the user has posted, I shake my head. Honey, you gave away your privacy in exchange for cat memes a long time ago. #Privacy #InfoSec

So... you're going to give me all of the IPSec tunnel details during our turn-up meeting tomorrow? No. The turn-up call is for activation and troubleshooting. The build happens •before• the meeting. I am •not• building out a new configuration and wasting everyone's time while I'm on-screen. #InfoSec #NetEng #Meetings

There are many opportunities for narrow #AI to make networks easier to operate, especially at scale. The analytics potential alone is awesome. I worry when it’s used to avoid understanding networking in the first place. We •always• need to remember that narrow AI is a tool and that the responsibility to understand what we’re doing remains entirely our own. #NetEng

There was a point where people started equating the #WWW with the #Internet. It was inaccurate, but it made sense for those people because that was what they used the Internet for. Now I'm seeing people equate social media with the Internet, which is even more inaccurate, but it's an understandable perspective for those people too. Will we reach a point where mistrust in social media will lead to questioning the usefulness of the Internet at large? Wait and find out, I guess.

Thank goodness for the switch back to standard time. If it weren’t for the extra daylight we’re getting in the morning now, I think my jet lag would be •much• worse than it is. Can we please just keep it like this? (Yeah, I know. Probably not.)
