Diverse employees and suppliers have fostered

"creativity and innovation in the merchandise and services that we offer,"

98% of Costco shareholders agreed with the board.👍🏿

Segregationists denied.

Segregationists are going to test each and every one of you, to see where your heart is at.

If they haven't tested you already, they will test you soon.

Do you know what you are going to say?

@wilpercy @mekkaokereke Nothing to do with today's vote but Costco is a better company than a lot of folks realize. Living wages, good benefits, equity, etc are all very normal for employees; Sam's Club by comparison pays starvation wages and treats its employees like dirt.

@wilpercy @klausfiend @mekkaokereke Costco has a medium sized box freezer for sale that's about $200. It would probably pay for itself within a year (the fresh ground hamburger is $4.95/lb...)

@wilpercy @samhainnight @klausfiend @mekkaokereke It really is unfortunate. Costco is one of the things where you must have money to save money. I know so many people who tell me "I just don't have room!" and they don't get a membership, but instead pay $5/doz for eggs and $2/can for canned chili.

Those of us wealthy enough to have space (be it earned or birth lottery) can take advantage of this, saving literally thousands of dollars in a year, allowing us to buy more space (and things like chest freezers/garage fridges), etc. Meanwhile, those below some threshold are stuck on a treadmill.

Capitalism is REALLY broken.

(yes, obviously a costco membership is not the solution to wealth inequality... but it makes for a really accessible metaphor that just about anyone in the US can relate to.)

@samhainnight @wilpercy @klausfiend @mekkaokereke Very good point. Go in with a group, split the goods. A Costco membership usually comes with 2 cards, too, and they don't really care if the two people are related. I had my roommate on my account for years - mostly so they could pick stuff up for the house - but the store was fine with it. When I went to change over to a person I was dating, the person at the desk was extra cool about it, too. "uhm... so do you want to remove, uh, the.... other person...?" Like very clearly trying to avoid mentioning a previous partner, just in case the current partner (who was with me) might get offended and land me in hot water.

Such a good company.

@mekkaokereke

When this white guy first had to cover sections on racism and sexism in his contemporary moral issues classes he would, for lack of anything better to start with, point out that all biases are irrational by definition.

To be biased literally means to make decisions or reach conclusions based on irrelevant factors.

And to make decisions or reach conclusions based on irrelevant factors is quintessential irrationality.

To be biased is to be irrational to the degree of that bias. To intentionally embrace your biases is to be intentionally stupid.

Somehow that equivalency seemed profound to a lot of students and I've never understood why.

Anyway, the above holds true for businesses as well. Costco seems to be run by smart people.

@CptSuperlative @mekkaokereke Tangent: I have that this very conversation with a Black/biracial colleague (he always identifies that way, so I'm echoing him). I once called racism irrational, for these exact reasons, and his response was: it's perfectly rational if you're a selfish racist. I don't think we're wrong that racism is irrational, but I take my colleague's point!

@CptSuperlative @mekkaokereke His larger position, one that I've heard quite a few Black thinkers and public figures make, is that we can't "rational" our way out of racism, and I think there's a tonne of truth to that.

@OrionKidder

I definitely agree that it's never worth the trouble to try to reason with people who don't want to reason about anything. And people who are committed to being stupid definitely don't want to reason about anything.

However, I think it's profitable to reason with ourselves and other well-meaning people, to ask what our implicit assumptions are and then drill down.

Because, I think, well-meaning white people and men tend to get so tripped up in guilt and other negative emotions that alleviating those bad feelings becomes more important to them than the stuff the feelings were originally about.

There are different flavors of empathy. Some kinds of empathy are incredibly strong feelings. Other kinds are more motivational and intellectual.

Both have their places. Sometimes it's appropriate to be thoroughly outraged but at other times it's more important to understand deeply and enact complicated strategies for real change.

@mekkaokereke This would mean that the largest fund managers voted against the proposal. This is interesting, because that means even the people in charge of a large fraction of the world’s wealth think DEI is a good idea.

Individuals and employees have zero (rounding error) influence in shareholder votes. The sum of all Costco insiders is something like 0.2%, and that’s likely almost all C-suite.
