PIN requirements on fido2 / #webauthn implementations have added such a huge amount of cognitive overload for people who can barely remember any passwords and are now having a USB device threaten to metaphorically self-destruct if the user enters one of three possible PINs wrong more than eight times.

Yubico's help pages are so laden with cryptic jargon that they're largely useless for anyone except security nerds. Like literally any stressed-out journalist would just start sobbing if I sent them this: https://support.yubico.com/hc/en-us/articles/4402836718866-Understanding-YubiKey-PINs #infosec #UX

tbh takes like this which grieve more about friction between computers and not the friction of having to throw away existing mental models humans are already familiar with, is why people are flocking to bluesky instead of mastodon--err--the fediverse--err, i mean gnu/fediverse... https://mastodon.social/@jwz/113828967578558803

Do I know any #Swiss lawyers on here? A web search for data retention policies in Swiss law just brings up an Alps-sized mountain of VPN-sponsored content and basically no truly objective sources. :oh_no:

"In an era when newsrooms are rapidly shuttering and political dissent amounts to 'terrorism,' Azar’s supporters say her arrests, jail time, and legal harassment mark a clear erosion of both journalistic and free speech protections. Her mistreatment is a harbinger that should concern all reporters, they say, and especially movement journalists staring down at a second Trump presidency." https://prismreports.org/2025/01/14/alissa-azar-portland-trial/ #pdx #pressfreedom

Pervasive facial recognition tech is deeply dystopian when it's implemented correctly and also when it's badly implemented too: https://wapo.st/4fQYlXn (gift link) #facialrecognition #enshittification

That I chose this weekend for my LFSC exam instead of going to DC for #shmoocon / #lobbycon is a regret I'm feeling deeply now.

  1. I needed a bio break after a frustrating hour that made me regret ever touching a computer, so before the exam was launched, before timer started, before any LFCS exam questions or content were visible to me, I took the fastest trip to the bathroom. I came back. I'm at the "thank you for completing the exam, please leave feedback!!" page. What just happened? Apparently my exam was just unilaterally cancelled. Now I'm waiting to hear back from support.

I am never doing this again, @linuxfoundation.

  1. I live in NYC, which means my apartment is small and lots of contraband that could be theoretically be used to cheat on a Linux exam was apparently in reach (a shelf full of philosophy and classical studies; almost all by authors that died before ever getting to think about Linux ever). Had to empty that shelf. Apparently the graphic novels, none of which feature the Linux operating system in the shelf below also had to be removed. I had to move every pen, even though there was no paper to write on, as well as unplugged USB drives, and explain what different things in my apartment were while trying to reach as far as I can with a limited USB cord for the cam. Then I had to show how far away my phone was from being reachable with a kind of cinematic opening sequence shot that showed my phone at the other end of the apartment in the kitchen area.

25 minutes later, the space is theoretically good to go.

  1. I had to scan one of a limited list of government-issued IDs with the vendor's web app or with a magic link accessed on a phone via QR code... the webcam image was too blurry but I didn't find that out until after being stuck in a virtual waiting room with the person in chat before the exam begins asks me to retry. I retry. It's still too blurry. I try using the QR code on my iPhone, it goes to a page using the built-in webkit browser which shows a blank white square instead of a webcam feed. They did not Q&A this feature, it seems. I tried opening it up in Safari itself. Still only get a white square and no webcam feed. Finally, after being told by phone tech support to try uploading via the desktop web app, which resulted, as before, with an image that's too blurry, I try using an Android phone. That time the QR code worked. It has now been 20 minutes.

Tried taking the Linux Foundation's LFCS exam, which apparently can only be done remotely by a third party vendor, while being monitored by some rando who has access to your cam and mic the whole time. Hoo boy, let me tell you how that went... 🧶
