Call me dumb and naive if you want, but seeing Tim Cook applaud Trump at his inauguration made me think of the Pride bands for the Apple Watch that I bought over the years and how fucking humiliating it feels to own those today.

@jsbilsbrough @nileane Cook is gay, so I'm sure some consequences are on his mind. There is a certain amount of fear built into the DNA of Apple, being days from bankruptcy at one point. The hefty margins and enormous war chest are evidence of this. They feel the need to weather any storm.

@nileane To be fair you could have bought the same from some factory in China and you wouldn’t get any guarantee of ethics. Thinking about it Apple did buy them from some factory in China.
What hurts is paying them the premium thinking you’re supporting one of the morally “less worse” corporations. And nope, it’s still a corporation doing what corporations do.

@nileane I was hoping for better from Tim on all levels. I just try and remember that while he leads Apple, I am sure that most of the company probably feels just as let-down by his actions. I also think his words and actions are for the benefit of Apple shareholders, and it’s a sad but necessary evil given his position. It still makes me profoundly sad.

@nileane The obeisance to Trump is legitimately disgusting, though I don't regret my Pride bands (yet). I actually think continuing to use them feels like a kind of personal defiance on my part.
I feel way more conflicted about the idea of buying more/new ones though. Will doing so show Apple that it is still important to support LGBTQ+ folks? Or will that prove we're suckers who will buy anything they make with a rainbow on it? Will not buying it show that we're not worth pandering to anymore?

Trump’s enabling the rhetoric that’s now allowed on Meta platforms, where they changed their rules to make it permitted to say anyone homosexually oriented is mentally ill.
This has to be affecting Tim Cook directly. If not, now then soon. And he must know that. I am surprised at his actions. I’m deeply saddened at the lack of these leaders making a stand.

@nileane I share your disappointment. I understand the political requirement for Cook, but I can't help thinking Steve Jobs is spinning in his grave watching that. And yes it should very much be discussed and protested, so he knows Apple users do not like this.

@nileane Personally, I don’t think the origin of the bands you already own matters. Everything changes, and even if Apple does a 180 now, I believe the feelings of those that made this band happen, and of those people who bought it, are genuine.
Wear that band proudly! 🏳️🌈

@nileane Amazon lost a $10 billion cloud contract because Trump was upset with reporting by the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post. Microsoft got that contract. Every CEO got the message.
Some of the tech billionaires on that stage went there to make money, some want their libertarian BS made into policy, but I think someone like Cook is trying to keep him and his policies from killing their companies.
Trump is great at forcing choices on everyone - we’ll all suffer the consequences.

Here is a gay man applauding a man who has openly attacked gay people, trans people and pretty much anyone who is different… Boggles the mind.

When you see how they operate worldwide, you quickly look past all the marketing bullshit.

@nileane It’s capitalism.
Selling Che Guevara T-shirts (oh, the irony) and BLM posters is primarily a business exploiting a trend.
This is also one of the reasons people feel that culturally significant things are stripped of their meaning and repurposed to sell fashion trends, with no regard for their original context or background.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from obrhoff@chaos.social
@nileane I had to think about this because I feel the same anger at Cook. I have chosen, though, to not feel humiliated at owning Pride bands because, to me, they don’t represent Apple. They represent people I love.
… but I don’t expect to buy another one. Not while Cook is CEO, for sure.

Sorry I‘m writing in german.

@nileane - as someone who always supported the pride stance of Apple although it was borderline cringe at times, I am baffled by the recent developments that remind me of the horseshoe politics leading to far-left nazis and other previously unthinkable mixtures of craziness.
As if there aren't enough worries to go around already.
How long before Apple gear is ethically as detestable as driving a Tesla?
