"After all, my friends, only a few hours away by air there dwell a nation of nearly seventy millions of the most educated, industrious, scientific, disciplined people in the world, who are being taught from childhood to think of war as a glorious exercise and death in battle as the noblest fate for man.

There is a nation which has abandoned all its liberties in order to augment its collective strength. There is a nation which, with all its strength and virtue, is in the grip of a group of ruthless men, preaching a gospel of intolerance and racial pride, unrestrained by law, by parliament, or by public opinion. In that country all pacifist speeches, all morbid war books are forbidden or suppressed, and their authors rigorously imprisoned. From their new table of commandments they have omitted "thou shall not kill."

Churchill was a bit of a colonialist bastard and a representative of a privileged upper-class who didn't give two shites about the working people. But he did have great speeches against Fascism.

Musk's intention of using data-mining and AI on public servants and agencies to increase "efficiency" under DOGE, means one thing: permanent automated surveillance of every employee of the State, to control, discipline and punish political dissent.

This, combined with his vitriol for the media, the control of Twitter algorithms to drown out opposition, and his attacks on Wikipedia - as a source of information that cannot be controlled - all point to the fact that the man is a Fascist.

The man is a Fascist. Read it slowly: the man is a Fascist.

Turbo-fascism, or as Varoufakis called it, "techno-feudalism" is here. Foucault would have been stunned by the scope, degree and capabilities of current technologies and how they're going to be deployed.

"Elon Musk lived in apartheid South Africa until he was 17. David Sacks, the venture capitalist who has become a fundraiser for Donald Trump and a troll of Ukraine, left aged five, and grew up in a South African diaspora family in Tennessee. Peter Thiel spent years of childhood in South Africa and Namibia, where his father was involved in uranium mining as part of the apartheid regime’s clandestine drive to acquire nuclear weapons. And Paul Furber, an obscure South African software developer and tech journalist living near Johannesburg, has been identified by two teams of forensic linguists as the originator of the QAnon conspiracy, which helped shape Trump’s Maga movement. (Furber denies being “Q”.)

In short, four of Maga’s most influential voices are fiftysomething white men with formative experiences in apartheid South Africa. This probably isn’t a coincidence. I say that as a fiftysomething white man whose formative experiences include childhood visits to my extended family in apartheid South Africa. (My parents left Johannesburg before I was born.) We’d swim in my grandparents’ pool while the maid and her grandchildren lived in the garage. These experiences were so shocking, so different from anything I experienced growing up in Europe, that they are my sharpest childhood memories. "

European universities and research institutes: now is the time to start selecting your pick of delicious North-American scientific brains, willing to exile somewhere else.

Things will get much, much worse for science in the US - and we can actually take advantage of that exodus, by creating the conditions to welcome those willing to come to Europe for freedom, safety and to be able to practice actual science about climate, environment, ethics, social sciences, technological R&D, etc, without fear of reprisal or censorship.

Let us flourish together for the advancement of humankind! Give them freedom, solace and refuge!

"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!"

cries she

With silent lips.

"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled scientific masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

"No moment could better capture the fundamental irony of Trump's second term: a populist revolution that begins with the people outside pressing their faces against the glass.

The symbolism writes itself. Now unbound by the need for re-election, Trump drops even the pretense of populist accessibility. The Rotunda ceremony, to be attended by billionaires, political power brokers, and celebrity sycophants, sets the tone for what comes next: a kakistocracy – government by the worst – operating in plain sight, no longer bothering to disguise its nature."

"Mr. Zuckerberg was amenable. He signaled to Mr. Miller and his colleagues, including other senior Trump advisers, that he would do nothing to obstruct the Trump agenda, according to three people with knowledge of the meeting, who asked for anonymity to discuss a private conversation. Mr. Zuckerberg said he would instead focus solely on building tech products. (...) Earlier this month, Mr. Zuckerberg’s political lieutenants previewed the changes to Mr. Miller in a private briefing. And on Jan. 10, Mr. Zuckerberg made them official: Meta would abolish its D.E.I. policy."

How will they get around loopholes when they're bought by investment funds and multinational corpos? Will they allow an investm...speculative fund to buy houses if they're registered somewhere in Spain or any other EU country? Because that's the main problem: houses being bought as financial assets, not for housing, via a collection of shell companies based in tax havens. They should downright expropriate every property in the hands of financial entities and outlaw any uses other than housing, with only public or individual ownership allowed; heavily tax anyone that owns more than two houses, to discourage accumulation and monopoly - period.

This is a band-aid that will have little effect.

Meanwhile, in Portugal we're doing exactly the opposite and further "liberalizing" the market and abandoning the restrictions imposed by the previous labour government. This will absolutely not end well when the bubble pops - but a very few rich people will become even richer, while the working class foots the bill.
