Apparently my kid told my partner she wants a tail.
Like a fursuit tail.
She's in 5th grade and just had a meltdown about how many people at school think she's weird. But she's going to end up wearing a tail to school and I don't think there's much I can do to stop this.
So, my furry friends, got any good patterns for clip on tails?

@julie
Boosted for visibility (I wish I knew good patterns!), but if your kid's going from 'everybody thinks I'm weird' to 'fine, I guess I'll wear a tail,' she's got better coping skills than I had for most of my youth!

I'm so torn because I'm afraid it's a bad idea to draw any more attention to herself than she already has on her for just existing while trans... but I also want to support her in expressing herself and embracing her weirdness.
I swear if this kid ends up with a fursuit before I do I'm going to set something on fire.

@julie @theogrin loads of kids are wearing furry ear headphones and hats right now. AnimΓ© cutesie is in. It might not be that weird.

Now that you mention it, there's a kid at her school who wears a cat ear headband every day. She seems well-liked, too.

@julie hmm clips i dont know, usually theyre designed with belt loops

@hi_cial @julie yeah, having just been to a con, I can confirm that's how the folks making tails for sale tend to design them. it's more secure, and it allows for a much stiffer connection to the body around the general location of the human tailbone - which is important for some designs.

@LexYeen @julie if a belt is a sensory issue, i think probably any old climbing carbine could be used to clip the belt loops to the belt loop on kiddos' pants, but there's a strong risk of damage to both pants and tail if some bully decides to yank it. a belt...they'll usually endure.

The kiddo wears a lot of dresses and skirts so there's usually no belt loop to speak of. (Pants are a sensory issue, lol)
I'm probably going to end up adapting a pattern with a belt loop to use a clip. Or maybe even a magnetic attachment if I can figure out how not to lose half of the magnetic mount when the tail gets pulled off.

@julie tails are super easy: a long tube. option to put a wire from a wire hanger in to make it poesable. stuff with batting. attach with safety pin.

@julie This might not be what your kid has in mind, but as an easily-kid-doable project, I just saw this video tutorial from a 15 year old the other day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMjRtxVT6IU (His channel has a bunch of other papercraft furry stuff, too!)

@julie almost every problem i've had in life has come from ignoring or bottling my "weirdness".
your kid is doing good and they're more right than anyone else. i'm so glad they have a parent who'll ask these questions!

ah, a rite of passage. Every school has Wolf Tail Girl, and I'm glad she's been bestowed with this honor.
Here is a pretty in-depth tutorial!
https://pupdates.matrices.net/post/126684480883/making-a-tail
That is made for looping the tail into a belt, but if you take one of those snap-off keychain chains then put that through the loop then it can be attached to a belt loop sans belt. It's how all the scene kids in my highschool wore their tails!

@julie @astraluma I once made a tail out of an old wire hanger and some old black feathery boas, and a string I would use to tie around a belt loop.
The wire hanger added rigidity so I could shape the tail and the feather boas were so light they didn't add any weight and they moved when I moved so it was like fur rippling.
Instead of a belt you could just use like, some silk to wrap around the waist.

@julie My eldest is a real-life fursuit maker. I'll ask them what they've got.
UPDATE: " would suggest they look up yarn tail tutorials on youtube because those probably fit the use case best + are easy "
