Putting out the call for advice: what's a good, cheap, low-power SOC that will run Debian and is not Raspberry Pi? I'm still carrying a grudge about their ties to the po-po. Doesn't need to be super speedy. Use case is as a vote-only quorum member for a Proxmox cluster.

[#]uspol I talked to stateside mum the other day and she said that her hopeless MAGA brother had finally broken the peace with her over her resolute retelling of Jan 6. He lives in the San Joaquin Valley, surrounded by irrigation-dependent farms. I wonder what the local mood is like now that the monumentally stupid orange skidmark just flushed next summer's profits into a dry lake where it will never be recovered.

All to score points with his base on social media.

Reading about all the ICE raids in the US and militarised checkpoints people are being subjected to is soul-destroying. I've got immediate family within reasonable walking distance of the border and the sheer number of human rights violations that take place in daily life there is astounding. Realising that we thought it was bad a couple of decades ago is now surreal.

Random reminder that if you don't have lived experience of gender dysphoria, you need to listen to someone who does before having Reckons on the matter.

I'll never cease to be amazed at the gullibility underlying arguments that the private sector is "more efficient" at delivering public goods.

If you imagine two operations, given identical revenue and service level requirements, any kid can tell you that the one that doesn't need to show a profit will have better outcomes.

How do libertarians get this obvious, basic principle so utterly wrong, and what makes them think they can fool the rest of us?

David Slack on the moral vacuum behind healthcare privatisation:

"Americans under their private system spend twice what other nations do - 19% of GDP versus 9-11% - yet get a poor outcome. The UK matches US cancer survival while spending 40% less. Medical bills cause two-thirds of US bankruptcies."

Not to mention systemic delay and denial of care that Actually Kills People and leads to extrajudicial executioners becoming folk heroes. We really don't need that here.

Remember how when a narcissistic manbaby billionaire bought a social media platform, one of the first things he did was to fire a lot of senior engineers and unplug servers at random?

Reminds me of what's going down in DC at the moment.

How is it that a sincere acknowledgement of gratitude gets turned into yet another instance of the infinite onion of layered grievances? I'm so done with this pattern of being deliberately misinterpreted in order to support a false narrative of victimhood.

A sincere thanks to the wise people who have helped me understand the value of calling this behaviour out.

Ugh. Cannot believe the Spinoff cited CNN and regurgitated the "Colombia smackdown" trope.

Of all the media outlets in Aotearoa, I had hoped for better from them.

I'd like to crowdsource a geolocated database of all the roads whose speed limits are being raised. Something I could refer to when planning a trip.

Just looking to stay safe, that's all!

The weaponised bullshit generation bros were doing a good job convincing everyone that they were selling something special.

Until yesterday.

"Limitations aside, the fact DeepSeek is essentially free, costing cents to use its API, open source, and was reportedly created by a team for only around $5 million (if you believe that) has, as Fast Company put it, raised 'several existential questions for America’s tech giants.'"

Watch those valuations burn. Grab popcorn.

Yes, it's still compiling. I thought about giving the VM more resources, but it's ticking over at barely 3% CPU.

Brand new FreeBSD 14 VM. I decide to put vm-bhyve on it to simplify the setup and admin of containers because I'm going to be experimenting for a while. Go into ports and do make-install.

That was an hour ago. Still fetching packages and dependencies and compiling them.

Another pesky detail carefully excised from the telling is the amount of misery that's been added to our society in order to "tame" something that was never caused by public sector spending to begin with. We now have thousands more unemployed (with few opportunities), food banks with empty shelves, families sleeping in cars, routine medical care being delayed or deferred, and a whole city's worth of young, motivated people leaving for brighter prospects.

Thanks, Luxon and Willis. Job done.

What the story doesn't tell us is that rent increases outpaced the CPI by nearly double: 4.2% over the last year according to Stats NZ.

What were those tax cuts for landlords supposed to do again? #nzpol

I have infinite, seething resentment for the way Aotearoa's economy has degenerated under the coalition govt. Inflation kind of sucked, yes, but you don't treat an anaemic patient with bloodletting.

One of my main clients gave the down tools signal last month (we'd already pared back most work streams). And I just had a conversation with the owner of a critical technology vendor ahead of a proposal submission for capital investment...he's about to put his entire staff on furlough.
