The TikTok ban has started.

You can still access TikTok content if you use a VPN to make it look like you're outside of the US, but if you have a US account, you will not be able to login.

@rancoisse Reagan had the politically delayed hostage release, Trump has the politically delayed TikTok release. How times change when trying to make the past admin look bad.

Looking forward to side by side videos of GOP politicians supporting the ban as defending America, and decrying the ban as Unamerican after Trump reenters the Whitehouse.

@evacide apparently people all over the world cannot access TikTok right now. Canada, Japan, France, UK, Philippines have all reported they are unable to access TikTok.

But that only covers the President, nobody else. So the question is not if Trump signs it, but if it has any legal force when he does.

@evacide I personally couldn’t care less about the platform, but if interpret this correctly it’s different from just changing your DNS to get around the ban. So kids are going to swarm and download scammy free VPN solutions. And we all know what those are… the result could be much worse than before.

@waldschnecke @evacide this. The unintended consequence of the ban will be worse than the thing they tried to ban.

Though there is a bright side: it might popularise VPN use to the point that tech companies finally start understanding that an IP address does not indicate a physical location, a culture, a language, or anything else about the person using it.

It's an Australian TikTok account and phone number, but TikTok appear to be banning VPN connections now, and because I"M using NordVPN one of the biggest they most likely have all the IP's banned to prevent Americans using VPN's.

@briankrebs @evacide They're doing bans at the account level -- people with accounts tied to the US (e.g., by phone number) can get the logged-out experience via VPN, but can't log in. This is probably not technically required by the law, but after the legislative stampede to vote for the ban in the first place, and pretzel logic from SCOTUS upholding it, I can't blame them for playing it safe.
