do not buy a Tesla. if you have a Tesla, sell it.

Elon Musk can remotely unlock any Tesla and share any Tesla's camera footage with anyone he chooses. remember that he is anti-trans and actively courting and collaborating with fascists.

That was some top level, completely ineffective showmanship from the right. I almost think they did it that stupidly on purpose...

They smashed things they already paid money for

The TV hosts bought replacement items for a few people that smashed them really well, or something?

In the end i think Keurig lost zero dollars, probably made more in fact when people replaced the ones they smashed.

@VulpineAmethyst Barring that, there is a SIM card connected to a telematics unit somewhere in your car. Thanks to people importing these cars around, needing to change the SIM to a local provider or changing out the entire telematics unit to a 5G version, there are videos on how to do it.

Removing the SIM card should disable wireless communications, but I believe you can remove the entire telematics unit.

Be aware, this will disable many features and doesn't allow for updates. It also doesn't stop the telemetry sent through Android Auto or Carplay.

My suggestion is to keep the SIM in a safe place and attach a SIM extension (pictured) into the SIM slot. This way you can periodically connect the car to the network to download updates, but then remove it again once you're up to date.

This is actually for many cars with connectivity features, be aware that in the future they may transition to eSIM which is like CDMA in that there is no SIM card. So don't buy Tesla again.

I'm glad you noticed it won't get updates, but maybe more critical would be OTA recalls. So reconnecting it to get updates would be required.

However, I would not trust that the car hasn't stored data that it will send once it has network. In fact, I'm almost positive it will do that, but i have no idea what data it would send.

@RnDanger @VulpineAmethyst We do know a few things about the way Tesla uses the AT&T network, specifically that they pay by the megabyte for data and are bandwidth limited. That means that while the connection is active, they could upload things like your location history, uploading everything in your camera's cache would probably be off the table.

Thing is, they can only get snapshots of your activity every few months when you plug in the SIM at a supercharger (I wouldn't do this when I'm at home.) So, Elon can't unlock your car or watch you pick your nose while you drive 99% of the time.

Thing is, we haven't touched on WiFi. I think it goes without saying that you shouldn't connect your Tesla to your home WiFi network in this situation either, but I suspect that superchargers and dealers may have WiFi that the car will connect to automatically and maybe without telling you. Heck, Teslas may hotspot to each other or do so in the future.

It's not just Tesla, Ford wants their vehicles to repossess themselves. We're entering dangerous waters with these new vehicles.

It's true that all cars are getting worse. But Tesla seems unique in that it has a politically active bigot who demonstrates a willingness to use that data for anything that fits his intents.

And the point about cell data costing money feels like a reasonable guess at best, but none of it will even matter if the car connects to a secret Wi-Fi at the supercharger.

@RnDanger @VulpineAmethyst The grandfather to this system is AT&T Whispernet, the defunct 3G network that allowed Kindles to access Amazon's book library without a monthly charge.

The idea is that AT&T will sell precisely metered amounts of data to a company, so that company can allow its users to access services it can charge for.

This is also how Verizon Hum works, and a bunch of these car telematics systems that allow your phone to do things.

Whispernet is now called AT&T IoT and they were so proud to get the contract for Tesla they put it online

So we have some idea of what's going on infrastructually.

Oh, and in doing research, there is one Tesla that has already transitioned to eSIM.

Trans CyberTruck owners are most in danger.
