@RnDanger @VulpineAmethyst The grandfather to this system is AT&T Whispernet, the defunct 3G network that allowed Kindles to access Amazon's book library without a monthly charge.

The idea is that AT&T will sell precisely metered amounts of data to a company, so that company can allow its users to access services it can charge for.

This is also how Verizon Hum works, and a bunch of these car telematics systems that allow your phone to do things.

Whispernet is now called AT&T IoT and they were so proud to get the contract for Tesla they put it online

So we have some idea of what's going on infrastructually.
