I am back from my blogging sabbatical with a new blog post.

Thank for that excellent piece. Mainly for the reminder that the best way to change people is to talk to them rather than at them. It won't work instantly, but even a prod can be enough. But the question for me is still whether prods are going to be enough to compensate for the hyperonliners.

Democracy requires people coming together to discuss issues, and this can’t happen if misinformed shouters and tough-talking-chest-beaters dominate the conversation.

This really resonated with me. My political leanings could be seen as broadly "progressive", yet I am a moderate in my approach. Both the far-left as well as the far-right are against the "dirty C-word" which is compromise. But democracy can't function without it. We have to find common ground or be destroyed.

I liked what you wrote.

In the eighties I worked a lot with refugees from Chile here in Holland.

I went to Chile in 1993 to visit friends that returned after Aylwin took over.

So I'm always glad to see Chile mentioned, because that doesn't happen too often.

And by the way, I keep my fingers crossed for Harris to win the 5th!

Thank you for this post, Teri - I think your comparisons to Chile are apt and very useful. FWIW, I found you online exactly when I needed to find a voice of reason in a hysterical media world. I don't watch Maddow (or any cable news) but I have always been uneasy hanging out online with people who put soooo much stock in online pundits, who don't need to have many qualifications beyond being good communicators. So, I have appreciated the journey so far......
