It seems a lot more likely that these are just transcription mistakes, perhaps transposition error or something

@smallJaguar @micah interesting. I had seen that post but didn't see down where people start debating this.

@esoterra @smallJaguar @micah MMSI code is programmed into the VHF marine radio - but you only get limited attempts to enter it as an enduser before it needs programming with authorised equipment (often only available to radio dealers and has a cost). So its not unlikely that vessels are transmitting wrong code (with 252 LI instead of 525 ID ) unless the Coastguard and Communications Ministry of Indonesia orders them to be changed >>

of course if these (mostly) Asian vessels do run into trouble and the captain presses the red button for MAYDAY or PAN PAN, the Coastguard of Indonesia or whichever country they are nearest to will respond anyway and not be too bothered by the wrong MMSI code, so it may not be viewed as a major problem by anyone (and better than not having MMSI at all on board)

@micah Amateurs! East European way of doing this (at least for non-EU countries) would be to form a comittee, staff it with friends, family and those with enough bribe money and the work for years on this.

@micah I feel like they missed the chance to point out in the text that Liechtenstein is one of the world's two doubly-landlocked countries. Yeah, the map shows that it borders Switzerland and Austria, and has no coastline of its own, but I feel like having it pointed out in print that both of those countries are also landlocked would help hammer the point home a little more amusingly.

@micah Liechtenstein and Usbekistan have one thing in common. They are the only two countries surrounded by countries, which themselves have no connection to a sea or ocean.
