Second verse of aforementioned song may be finished!
& if so, that's the song basically finished as well, except a little bit of fine-tuning of the bassline.
Or if not, at least it's pretty close, I think.
Yay :-)

Interesting thread from @ajroach42 on 1980s-ish zines, games, music etc, & how word got about.
Reminds me of early-days Single Bass. Poster design by cut & paste in the original sense: scissors & glue. Copies from the photocopy shop. Visit whichever city I'd be playing in a few weeks' time, spend a day traipsing about putting up posters, maybe drop off a demo tape or two. City street plan in a little printed book, to plan which way to walk.

I also have another fairly recent new one, which I think is finished as regards writing, and likewise needs learning so I can actually play it like I've imagined :-)

Vexingly, I've been having some trouble with my fingers, probably a kind of RSI. I don't think it's from bass playing, but it does overlap with bass-playing movements, so I can't be practising as much as I'd like to at the moment. But the only limiting factors with wrangling the already-recorded stuff are time and headspace!

So far, the new one has a verse, a chorus, a "middle bit" and an end, all of which I'm pretty happy with. Yet to come is a second verse. And then I'll have to learn to play the bassline I've invented :-)

It's Bandcamp Friday again!
Well I was working on the editing for what I thought would be the next release, and if I'd stuck to that, it probably would have been ready for today. But then I got an idea for a new song, and all my music-noodling time went on that instead! So the most recent recording is still Red Ferrari, my 3-minute pop song with a car metaphor :-)

Verse tune problem of aforementioned song has probably been solved! The solution combined a bit of the first tune-attempt and a bit of the second.
Then I've been experimenting with a bassline to accompany it. That's probably not quite done yet, but it has some good bits.
And then I want to write some more words, for a second verse.
So far so good :-)

It occurs to me that my song Weather ("you can weather this storm") might be of comfort to some people on the rough seas of today's news from America. So here it is for what it's worth.

Now I'm not sure I still like the aforementioned verse tune! I've been experimenting with how it would join onto the chorus, and so far, it's not gluing together to my satisfaction. Having a good phrase in itself is one thing, having it sit right with the rest of the song is another thing. Might need more tinkering, might just need a different tune for the verse.
However, I am still liking this chorus a lot!

Might have just got the verse tune for that song I was tinkering with last week!
I already had some verse words, but I thought the tune they'd arrived with was a bit too samey with the chorus. This one is better :-)

I am inconveniently late going to bed, but for a good reason, namely experimenting with tunes for a new song :-)

Thinking about what it means in my world when people spontaneously give me money for my song recordings.
It's not that the money itself makes things possible that wouldn't be otherwise, because it's not currently big quantities.
It's the sense of people tangibly signalling "yes, we really like this, and if you make some more, we'll probably want to listen to that as well". Like a "vote of confidence"!

Or if you'd prefer something snarkier, I recommend the previous one: "Can't bullshit a virus". Unusually for me, that one has a few cultural references which are specifically from the UK, and I was thinking of one particular disillustrious Prime Minister when I wrote the chorus - but the general flavour I'm sure will be recognisable more widely...

No new track from me today! The one from last month was Red Ferrari, a 3-minute pop song with a car metaphor. People seemed to enjoy that one, so if you like songs & you like bass guitar (even if you're not keen on actual real cars :-) ), you might like to give it a listen:

It's #BandcampFriday! i.e. where Bandcamp waive their percentage if you buy something.
I'm seeing a few people celebrating it along the lines of "musicians get 100% of your money". As a musician, I can report that that's not strictly true: there are payment processor fees which still do get knocked off. But it is true that musicians get more of the money today than on other days of the month :-)

Email from Bandcamp: "Roland is also offering Bandcamp artists and fans a free exclusive Roland Ultimate Studio Suite—providing access to iconic Roland instruments for use in your own music."
Me: oooooh that sounds good! ::signs up::
Web page: "we’re offering an exclusive three-month Roland Ultimate Studio Suite—completely free"
Me reading the web page: Wait a second. THREE-MONTH! Three-month trial is NOT the same thing as free!
Looking distinctly bait-and-switch!

Hello #MusiciansDay!
If you like songs, and you like bass playing, then you might like Single Bass :-)
"manages to make the bass fill the space most people need a band for", as a reviewer once said :-)
For ages I was mostly playing live, and failing to record the new songs to my satisfaction. But now I'm slowly catching up: 13 songs on Bandcamp so far, next one brewing.
Here's a little thread about some of them:

Sad to see that Frankie Beverly has died at 77.
Back in the day, when vinyl was the thing & I'd never heard of the internet, I somehow picked up a single (maybe secondhand) of "Back in Stride". Didn't know the band but loved that track. "I'm just happy to see / You & me / Back in stride again".
