@backerman @evacide Maybe that can be the "Inspired:" selection, mayoclinic.org and plannedparenthood.org and vaccination scheduling.

@evacide genuine question. Is it a bad thing to require age verification for things that are tied to addictions (porn, gambling, gaming, etc)? I think S. Korea requires SSNs for Internet access in general and it helps to regulate some of that. I've not fully thought out potential cons and I kind of just stumbled on the PornHub thing last week.

@xsamwellx @evacide The basic problems are:

  1. User: not possible to prove your age without providing your identity.

  1. Company: Not possible to limit access to only those of age without collecting age data on every single user.

Whether that’s a “bad thing” or not is a completely individual moral judgment not really related to the issue.

@jdw @xsamwellx @evacide I don't think it's helpful to pose this as a technological problem. You can do this, using anonymous credentials, but that does not answer the question whether you should, or whether users believe that it actually works even if it does.

@evacide I'm not trying to exaggerate or suggest a conspiracy theory, but honestly it looks exactly like Iran a few years ago, it started w/ Porn related services and YT.

Look where we're standing now.

@evacide already the case in the benighted nanny-state that is the UK. A few years ago, I could no longer access Stack Overfllow because Vodafone (my DSL provider at the time) had used them in their blocklist test system and somehow it had gotten activated in production by mistake. Soon it will be Wikipedia if Musk has his way.

@evacide Is it reasonable to trust, say, Proton VPN more with your internet activity data than literally any of the cartel members that comprise US ISPs? I honestly don't know, but I like to believe the non-profit Swiss privacy company is less likely to sell all your data or use it against you in all the nefarious ways we are now subjected to from our service providers.
