The USAID story is getting some attention but the far bigger threat is Musk's takeover of the country's financial system at the Treasury. Where's the response to that massively illegal act?

@petergleick It seems Trump has verified and approved it. Musk has been given that control and authority - but I haven’t seen or heard a word from senate or congress about it - just POTUS. Is there any reason for congressmen or senators if they are all sitting there passively doing nothing about this coup?

“Is there any reason for congressmen or senators if they are all sitting there passively doing nothing about this coup?”
This is how fascism works. Party loyalty uber alles. Anyone who was willing to defy dear leader in congress was primaried and driven out. So there’s nothing left but 50 co-conspirators in the senate who will bend over backwards and let him do anything he wants. 6 co-conspirators in the Supreme Court
The system is broken.

@HarriettMB @petergleick Musk has nit been approved by Congress to do this, DOGE has not been approved by Congress. Trump is not King. This is illegal and we should be shouting it from the rooftops!

@samhainnight @petergleick Some stuff before the courts today, and they are enabling Trump, despite a freeze order until Friday. The courts are not acting in the interests of settled law and the people. I’m calling it a #Coup because it is. I don’t understand why everyone isn’t on the streets demanding this stop - given all their information is now in the hands of #DOGE

@petergleick it is not the Fed (Federal Reserve) they have taken over as far as I know, it is the Department of the Treasury, which manages all US government payments. Elizabeth Warren, ranking member of the Senate banking committee, and Ron Wyden, ranking member of the Senate finance committee, have both sent urgent letters to the Secretary of the Treasury on this.

@kajord @petergleick Really interesting point about Fed because it is quasi independent (Trump can’t fire Powell). Its independence has been a source of frustration (it’s a “market” entity, which is not always a humane entity), but in a time of the government (ostensibly for the people) becoming what it is now becoming, the Fed offers a counterpoint or possible guard rail.
But Musk occupying the Treasury is a doomsday event.

@petergleick for years the USA propaganda told the rest of the world that in case of some attack they will save the world. But the USA can’t save themselves.

yeah like i don't really get why people keep acting surprised about media coverage and the application of the law.
police murder more and more people each year, something that should clearly show us how the legal system is unequally applied because cops frequently face little to no consequence for illegal and extrajudicial acts.
every year, more politicians are caught breaking the law then receive little or no repercussions while racialized and poor people do anything resembling what politicians or police do and they're persecuted heavily.
the news consistently presents us with a picture of the world that is to the demands of news owners and the state department.
yet we keep acting surprised when the law doesn't prevent oligarchs from committing crimes nor does it seem to punish them for their crimes.
likewise, we keep acting surprised when the news media refuses to cover some news stories while plastering others all across our news feeds

i don't know my mom's family of unknown brown people or adopted mexicans because the united states and colonial mexico committed genocide against indigenous peoples, resulting in my brown mom being sold by a catholic orphanage to assimilationist mexican parents who adopted during the eisenhower era genocide of "mexicans" and native peoples.
i don't have scottish culture because my "white" family chose to assimilate in canada before moving to the us because the brits had already been dominating and influencing their culture for generations.
we all share varying degrees of this struggle, some of us are just allowed more readily to wield colonial power over others. some of us are just better able to find comfort or protection from the horrors.
my brown family struggled genocide but to some degrees so did the scotts. empire has been eating my family for generations, only some of us have been racialized and used as fuel for empire.
im glad to share because i want to break this cycle.

Agree completely, but who would arrest Musk? Trump will instantly pardon him anyway. And sic his Proud Boys on whoever arrested or charged him. The only law in the USA now is whatever Emperor Trump says.

Musk is just helping Trump.
He isn't acting on his own.
Why people fret over all the corruption being exposed, is beyond my understanding, but is still a great source of amusment.

UPDATE: FIXED. Thanks Peter.
Please edit and correct your post. Musk & Co have gained access and apparent control of the Treasury Dept's Payments system. That is NOT "the FED". "The Fed" phrasing is used to refer to the Federal Reserve System, it's boards, and regional banks. The Fed is NOT the same as the Treasury Dept Payments system.
Elementary errors like this spread disinformation

The USAID actions will easily backfire on the US, stupid, unreliable, short-sighted and actually criminal...
It causes so much chaos in international relations that it is questionable whether it helps the US. It also gives China a license to develop better ties with countries with which the US still has a good relationship...
It takes time to react to the carefully planned actions in the treasury... a criminal and illegal takeover...
But undoubtedly it will come...
