Earlier today, Anglican Priest Calvin Robinson ended a speech at a pro life summit in DC by giving the exact same Nazi salute that Elon Musk did.

The crowd laughed & cheered.

The Anglican Church revoked his license.

This is how you handle Nazis. You condemn them. You don’t pander to them.

Considering how many organizations excused Musk’s salute as an “awkward gesture”, I’m incredibly grateful to see the church taking a strong stand against hate

I would guess the semantics probably lie in the denomination. Probably has the same meaning and they don’t have a distinction between the delicensing and defrocking. Would probably require more digging into whatever articles govern their church than would be worthwhile to figure out.

Being a splinter group is interesting, since it looks like the Episcopal church is nominally pro-choice. Which explains what he was doing there in the first place.

I am not a fan of The Church as a whole, but in the last weeks, they have shown, in the US, that they can do what they should.

@Mabande exactly! I really appreciated that. I’m beyond sick of people trying to normalize what Elon did (or worse, blame it on his autism). They were clear that regardless of what he thought he was doing, that action is never ok.

@broadwaybabyto This being a breakway denomination - there is a problem that evangelical thought is influential even in US Churches where it shouldn't be (Anglican, Catholic)

I'm not trying to no-true-scotsman here, but if there are protests and the military comes out, the presence of crosses, flags and priests speaking against fascism could be what keeps soldiers from firing. There are a lot in saner churches disagree with Christian Nationalism, and they could punch above their weight.

To be clear:

The Anglican Catholic Church is not affiliated with either the Anglican Church (known as Episcopalian in the US) or the Catholic Church. It's a splinter group that split from the Catholic Church because they thought it was too progressive. They want the pomp and ceremony that comes with being Catholic but also the ability to pick and choose which doctrines they like.

If you bump into them at demos, you can annoy them very badly by calling them Protestants, letting them ramble about why they aren't, and then saying "but you are Protestants, then, aren't you?"

Calvin Robinson isn't getting kicked out because he was a fascist. He's been a well known fascist for years. (Experienced antifascists may remember him speaking at Posie Parker's events.) The Anglican Catholic Church has a lot of fascists. They don't mind fascists so long as they stay mask-on. He's getting kicked out because he went mask-off.

Fuck the Anglican Catholic Church.

Robinson left the UK where he was born because no UK Church would tolerate his fascist agenda - so he is doing what he has always done. Fascism does not arrive in jack-boots goose stepping in parades - it often arrives hiding behind a fake dog collar pretending to be a christian.
