I now have over a thousand followers. I've spent a little while purging my follower list of inactive accounts, so I think whomever remains is active. A thousand is too many. You all have terrible taste in whom you chose to follow. I am very disappointed.

Happy new year, happy new fight. Today we're asking you to support the Pan African Workers Association. What follows is a joint IWW/PAWA statement and appeal.

Since November 2024, members of the Pan African Workers' Association (PAWA) and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) have been involved in a labour dispute with Apple Homecare, a company based in Norwich and headed by John and Dennis Bacon. The care sector is one of the most precarious in the UK labour market, with employers regularly abusing migrant workers, ignoring labour rights and care regulations, and stealing wages. Care is one of the most important components of our society; yet workers in care experience some of the worst conditions.

Workers in Apple Homecare reached out to us and reported being forced to work long, back to back shifts (sometimes for 10 days in a row), being underpaid and subject to arbitrary wage deductions, not being paid on time and not being paid for overtime, and working in a wider climate of fear and intimidation. Most of these workers are migrants and are subject to visa restrictions, tying them to their employer in order to be able to remain in the country. This is something that Apple Homecare seems to be perfectly willing to exploit, and arbitrary disciplinaries seem to be part of these workers' daily lives. Apart from abuses in the context of work, we have also seen documentation that suggests that, after firing workers, Apple Homecare is asking them to repay the sponsorship fee that the company incurred when hiring them. This practice is illegal, and yet John Bacon refuses to comment on it in our attempts to ask him about it.

PAWA and the IWW supported the workers to submit a collective grievance against their working conditions. Yet as soon as the grievance was submitted, the workers started experiencing the full force of employers' attacks against union members. Three workers did not receive their December paycheck, and as of today (5th January), two have still not been paid despite repeated attempts by the union to speak to John Bacon and Apple Homecare.

Instead of looking forward to the new year, these workers spent the festive period budgeting the last of their money to make it through. This has now led to a state of crisis. One worker needs money to keep up with bills and childcare, while the other is threatened with imminent eviction. With the situation worsening, we are forced to go public. As it has done so often in the past, the labour movement must once again pull through and show that when workers are united, we can win. In the face of the employers' abuse against us, we must respond with solidarity.

The money raised through this fundraiser will go to the two workers to support them with immediate living costs. If John Bacon and Apple Homecare do end up paying their workers, the money will go towards a fighting fund to be used to support the rest of the Norwich care workers in this struggle to improve conditions across the care sector. We appreciate your solidarity, and we hope to see you in the next stages of this campaign.

After a recent conversation I've just reminded myself that my city elected Herman Mashaba as mayor.

We did that. The biggest city in South Africa, the economic heart of the nation, we elected fucking Haircare Ayn Rand to be mayor. We looked at Bioshock and thought "yes this sounds like a great idea, we should be like that but not underwater." We put a person into the big chair who believed that Johannesburg should become Galt's Gulch.

The rest of South Africa mocked us for it, as we deserved. But because we're South Africa, nobody outside the country mocked us for it because nobody knew what fools we made of ourselves.

Among every sort of enthusiast there are those who think it's a moral failing that the general public don't want to be expert in their particular thing. There are music people who think everyone should practise violin an hour a day, car people who think everyone should know how to drive at a high level, gun people, logistics people, cooking people, and many others.

I once had a conversation with a skiing enthusiast who asked me if I like to ski.

"Not really," I replied.

"Well, you're wrong," she said.

Computer people aren't different in this regard. Most of us understand that most people don't give a shit about how computers work. Some of us get offended by that, and tell people they're wrong.

Computer users haven't become deskilled. Computer use has become more common.

There are still as many highly skilled computer users as there were in any previous generation. It's just that in previous generations there was such a thing as a non-computer user, and now every single human is also a computer user.

Economics, as everyone knows, isn't about making useful predictions or about having falsifiable hypotheses. Economics is the handmaiden of power. It's about finding powerful people and telling them that the wisest thing to do is what they wanted to do anyway.

In a more equal society, this wouldn't be restricted only to the powerful. More mundane people would also have economists sucking up to them. In a truly equal society - that is, in an anarchist society - everyone would have the same amount of flattery from economists. This includes economists themselves.

Did a stranger recently tell you that your sweater looks great just the way it is, or tell you that your paper is good when they haven't read it? They're practising anarchist economics. This is what dual power looks like. It makes the world just a little more pleasant.
