Toot

Written by Eugene Alvin Villar 🇵🇭 on 2025-01-28 at 23:29

I saw that I have had my current primary email address (via #Gmail) for over two decades now which means that my #Google account is that old too. The Gmail stats also say that I have a little under 60k email threads in there.

Maybe I should switch to @protonprivacy? I’m not convinced the benefits are worth the trouble/effort/cost.

@seav @protonprivacy whatever you switch to, make sure you migrate your email address to a domain that you own. That allows you to switch your email providers in the future with very little effort, namely without having to change your email address everywhere.

@seav I switched to Fastmail several years ago when I realized that if Google terminated my account for any arbitrary reason across any of their services, I would have no recourse and it'd be basically impossible to recover. I still keep my Gmail for a few accounts, but everything important goes through Fastmail.

@seav my very first message on Gmail was to the person who invited me (that was the only way to get in back then) and I attached a cd worth of MP3s because 1G!! Most email boxes gave you 10 or 20 MB

Joking aside I still have that account and use it, not as my primary email. If it went away tomorrow I’d be sad for a moment but I’d be fine. Nothing on the internet is forever especially if it’s free to you 😏

@mvexel @seav original advice for poker players went like "When you sit at a poker table, look if you can determine which player is the sucker. If you don't see one, get up, because it is you"...

In Internet era, it evolved to "When you get a service on the Internet for free, first look around to find out what product they sell to make money. If you don't see it, get the heck out, because you're the product they're selling" #google #privacy

seav@en.osm.town Switching to another email provider doesn't have to be a 100% replacement. You can have both and simply tell your contacts about your new email. You'll use your new email in new subscriptions. Little by little, you change your email in your accounts on different sites.

You can, but you don't have to do massive imports of your messages to the new provider.

Just to suppress the "effort" part of what you said. 🙂
