Before Google decided to let extremists rename bodies of water, it used common sense.

From 2008: "...if a ruler announced that henceforth the Pacific Ocean would be named after her mother, we would not add that placemark unless and until the name came into common usage."

of course it is clear that alphabet inc licks orange holes.

but waters like sea belong to international waters, basically to no one or no country. so it is up to others to decide naming for those water areas. and there is no global or international authority to decide those names.

so, technically both names are wrong or both are correct.

practically, this naming is politicized by orange turd.

btw, word "america" refers to continent, not just usa.

what about "gulf of canada".

@dangillmor this Blogpost goes against the statement from Google I read. In it the team says all names for US clients come from the Geopraphic Names Information System (GNIS) and if something is changed there it also changes in maps.

So Google is not actively doing anything. I guess somewhere between 2008 and now they realized it's a lot cheaper to just get the names from an open source and not do all the work by themselves.

So all we can blame Google for this time is being lazy.

I'm catalan and I work in the tech industry with a major online player (or a bit less 😉). I requested my own company to update the names of towns in Catalunya that they were showing, because they were still the Franco's ones. There was a time when the Spanish fascists changed the names of some towns in Catalunya. Google is the Source of Truth of these names in my company, so here we have it.
