Ambulances stacking up at the hospitals again. Not as bad as a couple of weeks ago when it was a 3 hour wait to unload patients... now a bit more than an hour. The hospital told the retirement place my relatives live in to "only call if it's life threatening" #health

Why do I mention this? There's almost no mention in the press that respiratory and other illnesses are surging. My son (a paramedic) told me "this is the worst I've seen it since the beginning of the pandemic". It's a mix of "crud" -- RSV, influenza, norovirus, COVID-19, and "everything else". Anyway, if you're able to mask, it's smart (IMHO), maybe you can dodge some of what's floating around. #health

(also, just heard them attempting to wrangle an ambulance, they were short ambulances here in county... "if it's really life critical, we'll free someone up and send an ambulance" was what I heard over the radio scanner. 😬 )

@ai6yr That's terrifying.

@Stitch26 @ai6yr same is regularly happening in England - NHS is struggling to cope in many regions (there's also the usual injuries from RTCs, violence and overdoses on top of the wave of illnesses)

@ai6yr Between all the viruses and the fires, it seems like now would be a good time to WEAR A MASK!

I spent today out in community seeing so many people outside without masks, the wind was kicking up who knows what... I wanted to be everyone's mother, giving them a heartfelt toxicity lecture.

@ai6yr it would be nice if people wore a mask when they were out and about...
but we cannot even get them to get vaccinated. like SMFH for eternity.
"Vaccination coverage with influenza and COVID-19 vaccines are low among U.S. adults and children. "

@ai6yr I did hear flu has overtaken Covid and the rest in hospitalizations, I don’t think they were referring to just California

@ai6yr I’ve been away from my choir since 2000, except for one quarter when everyone masked. We practiced in a larger hall then. I just returned because everyone was masking. However, we are in a smaller hall with poor ventilation and it’s literally freeezing outside during rehearsal. I left early with my CO2 monitor reading over 1700. A woman 10 feet away who asked me what I was sick with; I said, I haven’t been sick with anything. She said she was sick. People don’t get it.

Please people, stay home home when you're sick. And it really is a good idea to mask up during a surge of respiratory viruses.
Noro apparently really sucks though. That takes a lot of handwashing to mechanically remove the virus from your hands to reduce infection because it can survive alcohol and bleach.

@alienghic @odaraia @ai6yr yes and also that one floats through the air on the poop particles that float through the air when you can smell poop, and it lands on things and if you eat it you will get sick
And most of the restaurants around here have the open kitchen directly across a tiny hallway from public bathrooms. And that’s why I don’t even get takeout anymore. Even if the employees wash their hands before they touch the food the toilet is like 10 feet away from where they prepare the food. No thanks

@alienghic @ai6yr Norovirus, too, is ripping through the population as though we were all on a cruise ship. The comments here suggest why: social support including architecture and simple public health training are overlooked in favor of “convenience.” Handwashing adequately, plumbing design, ventilation, stay-home-when-you’re-sick guides and restaurant inspections are just a few examples. Thanks, community.

Unfortunately for people I'm unaware of any vaccine for noro and its apparently even harder to stop than covid. Its also highly contagious and its protein coat is much tougher than covid.
It can resist most cleaning products.

Try to get those vaccination shots in addition to wearing masks. Flu and covid is easily available, and RSV is supposed to be somewhat available. (Targeting elderly or pregnant people)
Masking is especially helpful in closed spaces, crowded spaces, or in close contact. (Japan's 3C's is remains good advice, and it was nice of them to make up an english mnemonic)

@alienghic @ai6yr just so you know none of those vaccination shots actually prevent you from getting infected so you’re going to want to keep wearing the mask regardless of how many vaccinations you get.
Everyone I know who has Covid multiple times has been vaccinated because everyone I know has been vaccinated.

@ai6yr Ja me and The Missus have been masking more of late. To try to avoid ordinary winter "crud" and anything nastier. Eschewing restaurants. N95s work great at keeping out mold/pollen/dust/dander, which are abundant since the rains and stirring from high winds.

@ai6yr
Vicious cycle. ED full, ambulance can't unload, ambulance now effectively out of service for next calls, and I'm guessing the fire departments can't help much right now as 911 first responders, being tied up with fires - which are exacerbating respiratory issues in the community leading to increased 911 calls.
I wish so hard that it would just rain.
