@butterface Welcome! Honestly I don't know how to make friends here either, most of my book-related interactions are one-offs with random people, but I wish you good luck!

If you haven't already made an introduction post (check the #introduction hashtag for examples) then that'd be a good way to start.

@diazona @butterface #20books is a fun wsy to start. One by one, in separate posts, post photos of the covers of each of 20 books that affected you profoundly. No comments needed, just the photo. You might get some interesting responses.

@patrascan @butterface I guess that's as good a way to start as any, but personally I hate that trend with a passion. There are (or maybe were?) so many people doing it that it clutters my feed, and the posts are pretty much devoid of content so I get nothing useful out of them, except on the very rare occasion that one of the covers looks interesting.

Of course nobody (except your server admin) gets to tell you what you're allowed or not allowed to post here, so if you want to do it, don't let me stop you! I would just ask that if you do this, please mark the posts with a hashtag ( #20books or #20books20days or whatever people are using) so those like me who don't want to see those posts can filter them out.

@butterface Hello and Welcome. I recommend connecting with the Bookstodon group: @bookstodon.

Though shortened in posts, all groups end in @ a.gup.pe (with no spaces). So, to get to the Bookstodon group, just typing @ bookstodon (with no space) won't take you there. You need to type out the whole thing, unless you are replying to a post.

@butterface I started by following some writing-related hashtags, then I watched which hashtags they were using and followed those. Some I resonated with some I didn't, some went into my filters.

That's the great joy of Mastodon for me, I can curate a positive experience.

You can also pin an introduction post (or pin more than one) so that people who see your profile can get an idea of who you are and then hopefully follow you.

@butterface

I am not much in it, but there are servers just for literature and somewhat on topic like https://literatur.social https://bookstodon.com and bookwyrm is similiar to goodreads

https://bookwyrm.social/

https://fedi.tips/bookwyrm-a-social-network-for-people-who-enjoy-reading/

And they are all connected and you can interact with them :)

The group system a.gup.pe was already mentioned. And while there is a lot of expected USpol noise currently, I am sure it will become better.

I recommend following many like @Emerenz Mostly German tho

Hello and welcome!

Iโ€™m currently reading Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, and will probably make my way through the Southern Reach trilogy.

What are you reading?

I should add: a lot of authors and also literary magazines post on the mastodon server wandering.shop, so if youโ€™re curious, Iโ€™d pop over to another browser tab and put in wandering.shop to see whoโ€™s posting in their timeline.

@butterface

One angle that folks don't seem to have mentioned in the replies yet might be to follow some #Bookwrym accounts.

[#]Bookwyrm is like #goodreads but #opensource and on the #fediverse, so you see a post when people review/comment/finish reading etc.

To get you started, here's mine: https://bookrastinating.com/user/da5nsy ๐Ÿ‘‹

@butterface

welcome - and you are already doing the first thing right - hashtags.

use and follow the ones that you like, and follow the people posting things that interest you.

from there on, it s a #snowball effect :)

there is also a form of groups -

e.g.

A Fediverse discussion group all about books and reading -

@bookstodon

you share with that group just by including it in your post.

and there s more:

I post regularly about the books I read; generally I read about 1 nonfiction book and 2-3 fiction books per month. Heavy emphasis on 20th century history, science, and scifi.
