People who generate news have manipulated how the news gets reported by controlling access. It's hard to be first to publish and to get those all too valuable views and page reads if you can't get into the press conference. So powerful people use access as a threat.
Now TFP has thrown news outlets he doesn't like (such as NBC) out of White House briefings, and I think this might be a good thing, because they're no longer restrained by that threat. Maybe they can start reporting with more veracity, instead of hedging on whether a gesture is a weird gesture or a fucking Nazi salute, or if a statement is actually a blatant lie, or instead of "going to the courts" how about "illegal".
Maybe a lack of access will free the "free" press, excluding the Bezos Washingtruth Post, of course.

I have to say that I'm really enjoying the influx of writers who have recently migrated to Mastodon and discovered the WritingCommunity hashtag, even though some of the posts are better tagged to reach readers or not relevant to actually writing (like this one, hence the missing #). This too will settle down, or see use of the most wonderful and glorious mute feature.
I think it's also safe to assume that along with writers, there has been an influx of readers as well, making this a viable platform for building a base of readers interested in our work.
Donate to your instance if you can. Let's keep this thing thriving.

I'm a member of a FB group dedicated to effective advertising on Meta and Amazon. This is because when I actually have a book to sell, I had planned to place ads there (this is no longer the case).
I've just seen a few authors complain that their FB ad performance tanked, starting around January 20. This is making me wonder if Meta is deliberately burying ads for things they deem to not be in line with the regime they now service. I mean if they're throwing people off the platform for mentioning Linux or Pixelfed, why wouldn't they get rid of authors who say things they don't like?
I'm wondering how many have had this experience.

The Canadian Dollar is down against the US Dollar by a good margin thanks to this tariff threat. It's also down against the Chinese Yuan, but by nowhere near as much, so if I can't find it made here, hello aliexpress.com.

A customer forcefully asserted that they'd stopped making use of my services and demanded that I cancel everything immediately.
So I did.
If they'd asked nicely why there was still billing, I would have explained that some of their critical business functions depended on it, and that they had not in fact stopped making use of the services.
But they didn't, so neither did I. Now they get to find out the hard way.

I saw this thing cautioning people to not discuss or name US Federal Government employees who protest or say anything negative about the new administration, including retirees, and because I'm an evil bastard my first thought was to find the ones who think TFP is a good thing, create fake social media accounts for them (preferably after hacking their Wi-Fi) and say the most vile things about the fascist cabal.
This regime is purging stuff without a thought. Let them eat their own.

When the dot com bubble burst I had mixed feelings because while a massive "correction" was definitely overdue, I knew a lot of smaller companies trying to do good things were going to get wiped out in the crash. Now if the LLM AI bubble bursts, I think the good-riddance to aw-darn ratio is much much higher, so yeah, if it wipes the VCs and Private Capital people who bought into this crap off the face of the earth, get the champagne.

I'm not sure which media outlets need to hear this, but if your "experts" are calling #StormÉowyn the "storm of the century", then you need to find experts who aren't in the pocket of petroleum companies. A more accurate description would be "typical of the increasingly severe weather we can expect with climate change".

When I was a child and formed my fundamental relationships with seasons, I lived in the snow belt. Winter often meant coming home from school, finding the shovel stored near the end of the driveway and digging my way in, with snowbanks more than twice my height. Since it had been snowing, it was always dull, cloudy, cold.
Ah but then on some days I would wake up to clear blue skies and sunshine! On those days it was so frigging cold that the job was to get from one warm place to the next as quickly as possible.
Today the sun is shining and the skies are clear and it's cold enough that your lips will freeze in less than 15 minutes.
I still fucking hate winter.

Are you a 20-40 year old in the US right now? Did ya get a flu shot? No? Go get one. Right the fuck now, unless you voted for Trump. As a last defiant act, the CDC added the Woke Retrovirus 2.0 to the vaccine that will cause you to either a) acknowledge your latent homosexuality, or b) realize that you really were mis-gendered at birth. Avoid this at all costs! It's much better to just die from the flu.
