So I am looking for a small project for my GIS class. GIS in context of archaeology. And I am in there as a complete alien. Not my university, remote participation. I am far from a major in this field

I am allowed to go wild.

Awesome suggestions so far from the prof are for instance pressure on archaelogic sites due to city grow. (Land use Datasets), Flooding or wildfire threats.

We are using freely available datasets from everyone. Hosting university is Cyprus (thanks!)

Open for suggestions

Quite interesting to see German news speaking of an inauguration with family, friends and billionaires.

It is pretty fascinating to see CO2 Emissions from Bremen, seeing that our steel production is about 58% of total of our city.

That means, no, there is no way around it than to improve there.

Going all Hydrogen would require ca 1.5GW of Electrolysis capacity, best case only 800 MW.

Europe has about 230 MW as I learned Tuesday.

Furnaces need to be renewed every so many decades. We have the window NOW. Arcelor Mittal operates two Blast Furnaces here.

For a small Open Hardware project I am looking into induction loop setups for hearing aids.

I do not have anything here atm, and I need to test ideally all ways, as testing in University will be cumbersome all time.

So if you have hearing aid equipment for induction loops that you would be willing to give away, that might even make its way to Hamburg for ccc congress, or can be shipped in Germany, just leave me a note.

No I will not be at congress, but can swing by.

Oh noe. Way to early and catching the Christmas tram.

This is why single digit times do not exist. A fucking nightmare.

(And yes many going to work here, which is high utilization for this line)

Best tho, clean windows no ads on outside it seems so no screen that provokes headache.

To make it perfectly clear, just because the tool does not ask for money it is not automatically ok to use and enforce it in academia.

And ffs hand out in the beginning all the tools and ToS that people need to use in your class. Else your teaching just sucks and you do not give a shit. No, you risk your teaching to fail because students have the right to not agree to ToS.

You are just leveraging your position of power and "no money, so ok" attitude on others.

Leave students their choice.

You do not like the rules?

No problem! There are alternatives.

Create and host your tools.

Create and host your content. Yes it costs. But it is honest and resilient.

And yes it costs. It creates jobs for folks to help you. Do not externalize it. You do not dig a hole and dump your oil into it either, even if it is so easy.

And mind you, nearly all unis have their stuff as well.

Often it lacks one feature or does not allow one external participant. And given accounts and stuff is a mess, external tools are being used and ToS mostly ignored.

GDPR? Oh you want the credit right?

Copyright? Oh right I quickly change see the template so it is not a stolen lecture from another uni (seen that, as tutor, hence knew the slides before the change)

Academia if you want to be taken serious, do play by the rules.

My personal pet peeve with #academia starts to be how whatever shit and ToS is being used.

WhatsApp as communication channel becomes mandatory, look 10 no code tools that have same features but huge licenses that run in web? Use them!

Oh three classroom solutions for one course, but we need to add teams too and zoom. Because why should we have our own infrastructure or care about licenses

Everyone talks about sboms and license managing.

Just for fun, do this for your courses.

They mostly suck

O.o instead of going to the fog collection workshop on Gran Canaria next week I now plan to go to the congress for hearing aids in Hannover.

I hate when priorities get shuffled due to external factors.
