It looks like there might finally be remediation to this inaccessible library design?
You probably saw the photo years ago.

@libcolleen Good. I continue to be amazed that someone signed off on this design.

@jessamyn @libcolleen Steven Holl Architects better NEVER get to design another library.
I'd prefer they go bankrupt, but that's probably wishing too much.

@dsalo @jessamyn @libcolleen the first set of plans for the renovation of my school's main library contained a completely inaccessible set of bleacher style stairs and seating between the main floor and the mezzanine overlooking it.
Libraries (all public institutions) need to respond to designs like this by firing the architects, suing them to recover any costs already billed, and putting the project back out to tender.

@libcolleen nobody should hire that architect ever again

@libcolleen This was one of the most batshit architectural designs I've ever seen. It's quite like the architect went out of his way to make it inaccessible.
And then, sadly, no on cared.

@CyberpunkLibrarian @libcolleen But think of all the architectural awards! And the "Most Beautiful Library" accolades!
Surely those are more important than people actually using the building
We're having our own fight currently with the architect that our administration is besotted with and any comments we have are ignored or shut down

@fskornia @CyberpunkLibrarian @libcolleen My first (public) library hired a now well-known architect to design a new central branch to replace an outgrown classic Carnegie.
It is very beautiful from the outside. He didn't care for bookshelves, so some of the interior choices for staff are interesting. And the showpiece chairs he designed are awful. But it IS accessible, at least.
I learned in architecture class that form must ALWAYS respect function. Never does in Big Architect libraries...

@libcolleen I still find it amazing that years of lawsuits were the answer, when it should have been "oh, you're right. We won't use the area for collections and will come up with a retrofit that shouldn't have been necessary if we were paying attention."

@libcolleen It’s crazy to me that no one brought up these problems during the original design phase. Not one of the people involved has a friend, family member, or even close acquaintance with any sort of mobility issue? None of them were taught to consider accessibility in their training? Seriously?
Shameful.
