Hilariously, I had all sorts of ideas to add to an RSS reader when I finally downloaded one. Can I remember and/or find the list of them? Not yet...

I finally downloaded NetNewsWire to gather RSS feeds. For some reason it already had feeds populated, most of which were totally unfamiliar to me. I don't understand that.

I'm doing some desperately-needed website freshening today. I can't keep putting it off just because I want to eventually overhaul the whole thing. That will come in time.
Only big change I'm considering now: changing my web host. Any US connections have their (personal and/or small business and/or blend of the two) websites hosted outside the US? Any advice on navigating that?
It seems like a good thing to consider, but I know nothing about potential options.

As I embark on a year (or so) of intensely reading Le Guin, I have the feeling that, no matter how much I get through, my favorite will remain Always Coming Home. As John Scalzi said in his foreword to the 2016 Gollancz edition, it is “sunk deep in my bones, one to endlessly return to, always coming home.”
But who knows? I may be surprised.

Time will tell of what today is the day before. But the sense of a precipice kept reminding me of one particular story title, and that coalesces with one of my intentions for the year: read as much Le Guin as I can. Revisit old favorites, get to what I've missed, smile over letters to the local editor.
I definitely do not view this as "The Day Before the Revolution," but I think the story will be strengthening.

I have my issues with the bifurcated characterization of Aloy (and tiresome characterization of Erend) in Forbidden West, but I continue to believe that the Horizon video game series is some of the most important science fiction storytelling of this time.
I am almost desperate to see it discussed more in academic studies. Until then, I will continue to feel its parallels when I read news about tech oligarchs and climate change.

On the one hand, I'm glad I never finished switching all my professional-leaning communication to ProtonMail.
On the other hand, I am irked that I'm going to have to stick with the Google devil I know until I can work out a better solution.
The environment is collapsing, fascism is rising, and yet digital wrangling is still the biggest stressor in my daily life. Wild.

Surely famous people could save a lot of money on "crisis management firms" if they simply stopped making horrifying choices.

Always bemusing when I create a typo that directly flips the meaning of what I was trying to say 🙃

This has been an un*expectedly difficult day, emotionally. Things were on a pretty even keel, nothing went wrong, I just felt everything heavily.
Fortunately, I've gotten much better about not just accepting emotional upheaval as an appropriate mindset at bedtime. So tonight I prescribe myself journal-writing, pen exercises, or a meticulous and/or repetitive task. I'm actually thinking some decipherment might do the trick, especially if the topic is bland...

Oh wait. I put my Good list right here on my feed. Clearly time to revisit it and get away from social for a bit.

Also noted a complaint comment under the post because these projects are requesting volunteers, not paid employees (and by the way, transcribing manuscripts online is OVERWHELMINGLY a volunteer thing; some of you may have done it yourselves in 2020).
And I'm conflicted, because I support labor, especially in my field, and want to pay people to do work.
But also? Sometimes people just like to do things and use their skills. Volunteers can hop in and out at their leisure. It's weird.

I'm always amused to see the mainstream headlines talking about archives getting volunteers to "read cursive" and transcribe documents. "Cursive" means joined-up writing, technically. But American cursive is a specific thing, and it is usually NOT what is needed to read pre-1800s documents.
1950s, though, sure.

Later, I will stock a bucket of sand and a container of ice melt so neighbors can access it if our parking gets icy. I will cook chicken noodle soup for weather and sniffles (from a cold? or from already-blossoming trees?). I will take care of some school forms with my husband. I will drink some tisane, perhaps chamomile, or juniper mint. I will complete my new Lego set with the sturdy assistance of my son, a true Lego expert. I will go to bed earlier than I did last night.
There. Centered.

To stave off the ugly (re: last post):
Today I will continue my calligraphy guild work, as workshops go on and elections are finally done so the board can charge ahead. I will actually set my own pens to paper for the first time in too long. I will put away laundry and get out the vacuum, because being closed up makes the dust feel awful. I will possibly read a book and will definitely catalog some books. And I might give my website some desperately-needed attention.
Mundane, necessary care.

My palaeography ladies began with political discussion, which is never good, and not today at all. The despair of "holy shit, everyone else is going to have to save us, and let's hope it only has to be through sanctions and tariffs and not outright war" rose up before I could stop it.
Now I'm carefully writing a list of everything I need to do today, and the boundaries of what I cannot do today, and let's hope I can stick to it.

I had no idea what was going on in North Carolina post-election and Helene. Snatching hell from the jaws of the paradise built in hell, to turn a phrase on Rebecca Solnit's phrase.
Those quotes from the chair of the redistricting committee perfectly encapsulate the screamingly anti-democratic mess. And the results of the whole thing could ripple through the rest of the country.
