Toot

Written by John Allsopp on 2025-01-17 at 00:37

Some PM at Google is looking like a genius today as Gemini adoption soars in gmail because it is a huge PITA to turn off (option buries miles deep in setting)

Meanwhile Proton the front runners for my migration away from Gmail turn out to be terrible folks, Fastmail have very poor labor relations to say the least–where should I go?

@johnallsopp I genuinely don’t know, but I’m also looking for alternatives to Proton. Real bummer to see that happen.

@johnallsopp I am with Proton and have been disappointed with their path both product and politic. But like you I have no idea where to go next! Not gonna self host.

Following, hopeful to see some recommended options.

@johnallsopp it will answer anything you ask it too! Don't put much stock in those generative comebacks though.

@johnallsopp Coincidentally today i weighed Tuta Mail formerly Tutanota vs Fastmail after cancelling my #Proton sub which lapses in April.

Cost-wise, for my usage, it's tuta by long shot, more features for less money.

Will have to shop for a vpn (mullvad seems to be the one bandied about these parts)

@johnallsopp I've been using runbox.com for a number of years. Their interfaces are so-so, but you can use any mail client. Reliable, good support (needed only when I migrated.)

@johnallsopp ethical purity is hard, isn’t it? And ultimately futile under current conditions.

Do you go to the European-domiciled company with the Trump-sycophant CEO or the Australian company with US-data centres and questionable labor relations?

I have found that https://european-alternatives.eu is often a good place to start looking.
