I just saw someone wonder aloud whether it was wrong to post something on their website that they enjoyed writing but doubted anyone wanted to read and my brother in Christ I think you may not understand what having your own website is for

True story my husband and I have a shared document that's at least five years old at this point for a bookstore/cafe called Dorothy's so we can have a loyalty program called Friends of Dorothy's.

It's a shame I'm so badly matched for running synchronous businesses (i.e. brick and mortar businesses, anything that requires you to be present when a customer wants to buy something from the business) because I have so many Good Ideas for queer space branding.

Like, my guy, that's the whole fundamental underpinning of this system.

But it's not a glamorous cultural narrative for them and I think that's so, so funny.

Like the core premise of capitalism is that contributing capital is valuable and people should be rewarded for it. (And I don't necessarily disagree with the premise, I just think there are other economic systems that make sense, too, and that perhaps contributing capital isn't quite as valuable as we're currently making it out to be.) But when it comes down to what value an individual contributed to an effort, capitalists do not want to be perceived as their value being their capital.

The funniest thing about capitalism is that the capital class just refuses to accept that the value they're contributing is the capital.

Elon Musk could buy Gilead outright, still be a centibillionaire, give away Lenacapavir for free, and be known forever as the man who ended HIV.

But he would absolutely never do that, because it would make him just rich, not a genius, and he can't just be rich.

I'm gonna be so mad if I read a bunch of C code only to discover it's doing the exact same thing I'm doing and my results are right and just looked wrong because I don't know what the results are supposed to look like

I'm going to have to go read a bunch of C code with no comments again, aren't I

I know C has comments which means y'all are doing this to me on purpose

I have deep respect for people who reverse engineer things, working with underspecified binary data is a nightmare.

Let me just counter the rampant disinformation everyone is spreading right now:

Showing up to the birth of a baby with a fucking drum you're going to play is not a gift and the parents are well within their rights to murder you violently if you attempt it

"because you help add redundancies and improve processes and stabilize things so it's easier to take PTO?" I mean, sure, sometimes, but I think the bigger contributor is that it turns out that a single person showing up to consistently and assertively say "don't do that that's stupid" is an alarmingly effective way to combat glorifying burnout.

The work accomplishment I'm proudest of is that when I join a team, statistically, the amount of PTO that team takes goes up.

If the content appears under someone else's domain, you do not own the way people view your content, so you do not own your platform.

If the content doesn't live on your server, you do not own the underlying data being viewed, so you do not own your platform.

I think my litmus test for "owning your platform" is "is your content published under your own domain" and "is the data stored on your own server". BlueSky succeeds at the latter but fails at the former (unless you want to maintain your own App View, I think, which I understand to be prohibitively expensive because you need to host everyone's data, then, not just yours) and Mastodon in theory succeeds at both but fails at both in how almost everyone (including me) uses it.

I wish there was like, a Stripe Atlas but for companies that weren't supposed to grow huge. SMB Stripe Atlas: we'll set you up an LLC, teach you how to keep your books for your subscription-based SaaS, connect you with a law firm we're partnering with who will write your SaaS Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for a pre-negotiated flat fee, and host a Discourse forum full of other people doing the same thing.

ETA: and health insurance! Offer a group-negotiated health insurance plan!
