With profound sadness, I share that we've lost our good friend and colleague Brendan McAdams (@rit ). A brilliant programmer and cherished member of our community, Brendan was a core contributor to Perl and someone who stood firmly by his principles throughout his career. Please boost so others may know his name and legacy. (1/8)

Many knew Brendan for his technical brilliance, but I knew him as a warm, principled human being who brought humanity to our often cold industry. He was a passionate hockey fan who got 1:1 lessons from Dave "The Hammer" Schultz, split his heart between the Flyers and Sharks, and would casually joke, "why would you want to live NOT near a hockey arena?" He dreamed of moving to Canada - for the poutine, ketchup potato chips, and perhaps one more turn of Civilization as his beloved Canadian empire.

What I admired most about Brendan was his unwavering integrity and zest for life. When faced with opportunities that conflicted with his values, he wouldn't compromise - even at personal cost. He believed in working to live, not living to work - a lesson he was proud to have learned. (3/8)

Whether he was taking baking classes to master croissants from scratch, kayaking to shipwrecks, snowboarding at Dodge Ridge, or sharing his love of Discworld and Tolkien maps, he approached life with genuine curiosity and a craftsman's appreciation for doing things right. (4/8)

2023-2024 was a year of personal triumphs for him - getting into the best shape of his life, finding a home in Emeryville, diving into Rust programming, and getting back on the slopes after injury (particularly the slope that set him back). He shared his struggles with depression openly, and his loss is a painful reminder that our industry must do better at caring for its people. Tragically, his most recent last day of work was his last day with us. (5/8)

Brendan shared his thoughts on the industry he helped to build, "It's unfortunate to see so many formerly open source companies switch to business friendly and consumer antagonistic licenses lately" - he understood that technology should serve humanity, not the other way around. In 2015, when I worked closest with Brendan, he shared that he found a home in building something meaningful, reminding us that the best work comes from places where we feel we truly belong. (6/8)

Brendan found joy in quality and craft in all its forms - from the perfect cup of tea at Mariage Frères to the artistry of the Project Hail Mary audiobook. He appreciated classic science fiction, understood that great dice aren't a luxury but a necessity, and knew that books aren't loaned but passed on to the next potential fan. (7/8)

To those who knew Brendan: share your memories. To those who didn't: we lost someone special - a programmer who proved you could be both brilliant and human, who stood by principles even when it hurt. Someone who found equal joy in mastering code or baking bread, who showed us technology is just one part of a life well-lived.
Rest easy, friend. The Flyers & Sharks games won't be the same without you, and Civilization will miss one of its most dedicated kings. (8/8)

@armurray this is gutting news.
While I only had one f2f with him, weβd sometimes connect on that other social platform. He enjoyed my dog photos.
His heart was big.
Thank u for sharing this update. I donβt know what to say.

@armurray Lovely tribute. We shared so much with the Scala and hockey and pets, I had forgotten the Perl. Absolutely heartbreaking.

@ross @armurray Oh, no. Iβm not sure Brendan and I ever met in person but I always looked forward to trading some hockey taunts or just a funny little exchange. It wasnβt often but I felt privileged every time we exchanged words.

@xbsharp @ross @armurray Thank you for the warm words.
I met Brendan only once, at ScalaIO in Paris (donβt remember the exact date) but I'll miss his funny memes and snarky and insightful comments on tech, people and life.
