I'm beyond devastated by this news. Brendan was a very close friend, yet I failed to grasp how close he was to his breaking point.

I hope I can share more thoughts about what his friendship meant to me and what I admired about him. But for now I just need to process this.

It's starting to feel like hiring managers and recruiters, at least for engineering leadership roles, don't value generalists who are good at a lot of things. Too often, if our resumes don't repeatedly highlight the key words and phrases they're looking for, we get passed over.

Take Ruth up on this offer! These courses are fantastic, the material she's assembled is invaluable, and the community you get to join is a lovely, diverse group of amazing people.

Two apps I recommend if you're straddling the line across both Bluesky and Mastodon are OpenVibe (for browsing and posting, also has limited Threads support) and Linky (for sharing from other apps on iOS).

I posted recently that I was looking for my next gig, but I wrote a bit more on the topic on LinkedIn. If you don't mind signal boosting (here or there), I'd appreciate it.

Ruth's classes are a great investment in your future. The information and practices you learn (or practice if they're already familiar) will stick with you. And the community and curated information she's pulled together for this will reward you with lifelong dividends.

Really worried about what this means for Ukraine. I can't imagine it's going to be good for them in any way.

That said, I'm open for work: freelance consulting/advising, coaching for new and experience engineering managers, or even fulltime leadership rolls. So seems like the effort is necessary.

"If you think this does not affect the women in your life, it's not because it's not happening to them, it's because they don't trust you enough to talk to you about it." <- THIS!

It's worth taking a few moments to review these likely all too accurate predictions from @anildash regarding Oprah's upcoming AI special: https://www.anildash.com//2024/08/31/oprah-wrong-ai/
