Toot

BTW that NY Mag/Vulture article about Neil Gaiman is as graphic and nightmarish as the most detailed things (podcasts and transcripts) previously circulating, but includes new details related to exposing a young child to significant harm, so just, ugh. Keep that in mind when you decide whether or when to look at it.

(Thanks to friends for warning me in advance that it was extremely upsetting.)

Note: I can't keep you from posting in my replies to express disdain for people who liked NG's work to begin with or preen about never having liked his work or complain about the paywalls that produce the money that allows journalists to follow legally risky stories for months, but it would be cool if you didn't, just as a treat for my brain.

@kissane Thanks. I'm not going to read it. I'm also not going to read (or watch) anything by or associated with him, ever again.

@kissane

Gaiman's work is amazing. It's just so disheartening to learn that one's heroes are, in reality, horrific monsters.

@kissane what a horrible person. Damn. I skimmed it because it was too much, but I just feel duped. It leaves you feeling unable to trust anything.

@kissane Thanks for the warning, I have already written Gaiman off as a predator and don't need more bad things in my head.

@kissane

Don't mean to seem like I'm finger wagging or anything (so sorry if I do), but I also saw a friendly reminder to CW any talk of this as there are a number of survivors of sexual abuse throughout Fedi who would prefer to choose if and when they engage with this sort of thing

@TheBreadmonkey Oh hummm I feel like CWing a post that is itself a long CW might be counter-productive, but I could be totally wrong! (I don’t see this as scoldy at all.)

I plan to put my word filter back on his name after today. So awful.

@kissane @TheBreadmonkey I think (that's super personal) that if you don't put more details in your post that you would put in your CW, than it's just fine. I didn't find Erin's post more triggering than all the CWs I read today :)

@kissane When I first joined that Bluesky site trying to find a place to go to after Twitter, Neil Gaiman interacted with me a few times there, I was never a massive fan- I saw him do a talk once, I was a fan of The Dresden Dolls more and knew him because of A Palmer, and my other half digs Sandman.

It's a shame that those few small interactions which I thought were very cool are utterly tainted now.

I'm embarrassed that he liked and shared some of my posts now.

Vile man.

@kissane I made it ten paragraphs in, and decided that was as much detail as I needed. By that point, I was cured of any interest in further interactions with ‘Sandman,’ et al.

@kissane Damn! I’ve never read his work (even Coraline) but was warming up to the idea maybe he’s work isn’t all bad. But reading this has been a great reality check. Also thanks for the heads up on the article

@kissane its soooooo tough, I’ve been taking it in pieces. It’s such a reckoning to take in with how important his works were to me in my late teens / early twenties, like, fundamentally / developmentally. It’s such an incredible piece and/but also whewww
