So being illiterate in technology and a newbie to Mastodon, I am finding the concepts on how the #fediverse works fascinating and intriguing. Yesterday i spent a long time browsing @fedi.tips and came across this
https://fedi.tips/its-a-really-bad-idea-to-join-a-big-server/
I found this quite concerning, especially now during a time where there is a mass exodus of people from twitter and Facebook and Instagram. Are all these people logging onto mastodon.social ? Two of my friends who joined yesterday, joined on that server, because of course it's much easier when it's presented to you on the front page of joinmastodon.com
Is there something that can be done to address this issue and save Mastodon from ever being sold? And if yes, i imagine people are working on it?

@Ungrimironfist joinmastodon.com, isn't that a Gargron managed site?
Anyway, I was off there pretty soon. The local feed was garbidge. The difference with the enjoyable local feed of Warhammer.social (rest in peace sweet playground) was shocking. Should find a place that's at least a reflection of part of your interests @FediTips

Agreed of course.
But if we want masses of people to move away from toxic and centralised places like fb, we need to have the right infrastructure to cater for all kinds of people at one go and not just ppl like us who have the time/interest/nerdiness to invest and delve into the fediverse. If my mom decides to join mastodon, despite her good intentions, she would still probably sign with mastodon.social because that is what has been shoved to her when she showed intention to join. She has no time, nor desire, nor knowledge to keep on looking for servers that suit her. Most people just want to connect with others - they dont really care about the nuances or the little details that make the infrastructure for social media (and I'm not making any judgement here...people have their lives outside of being connected, and that's already hard enough to navigate ๐ it's just how it is)

@Ungrimironfist @erikcats I'm going to go on a limb here and say that for the same way non-car people ask advice to car people, non-technology people should ask the person they think knows best about technology.
So for your mom that's probably you I'm afraid.
When you say "we need to have the right infrastructure to cater for all kinds of people", we already do, and good news you are now part of it.
As in you are part of the whole communication infrastructure that mastodon is.
There is no magic solution to finding the right place since everyone is different and want different things. But you know your mom, so with that in mind, you probably can start asking question that hopefully will lead to answers.
Answers you can then give to your mom.
Happy to help with the answering the questions if that helps

Hi! many thanks for your offers of help. much appreciated and i'll keep that in mind.
I am not sure i agree with your analogy of the car to be honest. There are a lot of differences. The most obvious one being that most of the corporate run social media are technically "free". Of course we all know that in reality we are paying with "data", but to a lot of people that doesn't really matter, as long as manages to connect them with others and as loing as its financially free. On the contrary, buying a car costs a lot of money, so automatically one probably thinks twice about just buying the first car that they see and would of course ask a mechanic for their opinion.
and that is exactly why if anyone wants to build something for everybody, they need to make it as easy as possible for everyone to join.

The main thing that ought to be done is JoinMastodon recommending a different server as their "default", and then rotating it regularly.
Unfortunately as it looks like they're not doing that, the next best things we can do are to encourage people onto other servers and to use third party apps.
This actually makes sense anyway, because other servers tend to have much better moderation, and third party apps tend to have much better features. ๐

Thanks for sharing. I did not see that page before and as an admin of a small server, I fully agree to everything written there. Honestly, their (lack of) moderation has become a huge problem (we have blocked several CSAM accounts from there), and true enough, I would be afraid to defederate for fear of losing visibility and interaction with the good guys.
Worse still and that is my main grief against them: they never, ever answered to my numerous requests for our server to be listed on their directory. I asked litterally ten times, provided all the good info, and never an answer. Not even a "no". It gives a very bad image, very impolite (I understand they may be busy, but in two years? c'mon), it makes me wonder if there is some kind of discrimination because we are a gay-focused community?
But, nothing I can do. They are too big, they do what they want, but this attitude does not support our values. And they know that without visibility, small servers are doomed to stay small, thus killing the very decentralized concept and value. And they control visibility.
