The main thing that ought to be done is JoinMastodon recommending a different server as their "default", and then rotating it regularly.
Unfortunately as it looks like they're not doing that, the next best things we can do are to encourage people onto other servers and to use third party apps.
This actually makes sense anyway, because other servers tend to have much better moderation, and third party apps tend to have much better features. 🙂
