"because the average electric vehicle (#EV) owner is wealthier than the average person, they still have a bigger than average carbon footprint"

Wealth is a problem.

@edwiebe this is why I think climate conscious individuals should be pushing government to incentivize the EV conversion industry (as well as public transit). Education programs for trades. Subsidies for companies making EV drive train kits (motors, transmission converters etc). Incentives for garages to take on the work. Incentives for used car owners to convert their cars.

@edwiebe

IF automakers allow us to have smaller EVs - like the Chinese ones they fight tooth and nail to keep out of the country - lots more of us would buy one. Seems they don't really believe in that "free market [TM]" thing.

Instead, they prefer to whine that "The consumer" doesn't "want" to buy their EVs.

Well duh. They're too expensive.

@CelloMomOnCars @edwiebe Chinese are also on the vanguard by using the more sustainable and cost effective sodium-ion battery instead of lithium which is dangerous, rare, unsustainable.

Americans are choosing for scarcity, justifying occupation & overthrow of foreign countries (like Musk with the coup in Bolivia for lithium).

@CelloMomOnCars @edwiebe Poverty is a bigger problem. Have a look at the environment in Haiti vs Dom Rep for example. Haiti is literally brown because people use all the plant matter for fuel. Poor people will burn whatever is available.

Reading the article, the problem is not the EVs nor wealth, but rather the fact that electricity and goods transport is coal and oil powered.

A lot of wealth will be required if you intend to change that.

@CelloMomOnCars @edwiebe Citroën makes some good EVs. I really like the Ami - a tiny "quadricycle". Top speed 28mph. Range 46 miles. Good for going to the market & around town. About $6,600, if you could get it in US.

@SordidAmok @edwiebe

The Ami will never be sold in the US.

Do you see the Audi A1 here? Okay the BMW 1 series finally made it, after a very long delay. Americans starting to think Germans start counting at 3.

"Americans like large cars!"

A lot of us don't, but they don't give us the choice.

@CelloMomOnCars @SordidAmok @edwiebe still dreaming of a slightly lifted 4x4 EV Honda Fit. It would be our perfect car.

Interestingly the people I see driving them are generally either 14-25 or 60+ in urban/peri-urban environments where all the driving is limited to 50kph anyway. Perfect for going to school and running errands.

(you can get your scooter license at 14 in France)

It's #CarBrain that calls it an EV only if it has four wheels.

In fact, the EV revolution comes on TWO wheels.

@CelloMomOnCars @edwiebe I saw an article the other day celebrating that EV prices were finally on par with gasoline car prices.

And my brother in Cthulhu, have you seen the prices of new gasoline cars these days?

Car manufacturers have discovered that the subscription model works, and so are fine with raising prices sky high since for the people buying new cars, it's about whether they can afford the monthly rate.

It all completely ignores the majority who buy used.

@jens @CelloMomOnCars @edwiebe

Have you seen the price of used cars (in the US)? They charge what used to be the cash price as the down payment, with a low weekly or monthly payment on top. Finding a nice 10 year old car for $500 that you can drive for years is long gone, you will be lucky to fnd that as a down payment on a 10+ year old car. Even used car dealers don't want to sell you a car as much as an unaffordable payment plan with added electronics for speedy repossession.

If I'm interpreting right, that started after year with hurricanes: People needed their flood-ravaged cars replaced and used cars became very expensive

As climate-change boosted hurricanes keep coming, I don't see this changing soon: another reason to build a more reasonable transport solution than sticking each person in a 3-5 ton metal box on wheels.

Aha here we go:

Europeans also not buying enough EVs.

Carmakers blame consumer "reluctance".

Ask for more time to decarbonise.

EU govt. puts foot down ( not on gas pedal).

Insists car industry comply with legal limits for fleetwide carbon emissions.

Car industry lowers prices.

Now, already, people rubbing their hands over the expected increase in EV sales.

@CelloMomOnCars @edwiebe @inthehands People would also need to stop having “EV with the highest advertised range among those I can afford” as the sole criterion for choosing one.
