Fiber link is down and the backup ADSL line is just not cutting it. Sigh

In the category of useful things I discovered recently: https://www.legrand.fr/catalogue/prise/prise-de-courant-2pt-surface-confort-avec-prise-usb-type-c-integree-avec-plaque-celiane-blanc

A regular (for here) plug plus a 7.5W USB-C plug. Fully usable regular wall plug, but including a USB-C plug for phones and tablets. Bonus: these are the style of plugs that were installed when we renovated our kitchen a few years ago so I can easily swap them

Wow. Making crepes on a real cast iron crepe surface is so much better than non-stick covered aluminum.

Downsides: this thing is huge and weighs a ton. But so worth it

Whoo boy does this give me the feels… As far as a process description goes, this is worth transforming into an ISO document as it’s the most accurate rendering I’ve seen

Why IPv6 still drives me crazy: there is the baked-in assumption that you own your range. This is fine for companies that meet the ARIN End-User requirements:

In any case, my issue is the multi-homing one, running 3 "sites”, but two of them are connected via dual-FTTH connections where the ISPs assign me my prefixes. So even if I get my own range, I can't use it on my providers' networks.

Sigh Siri. Years in, and you still understand :

“Pasta timer, 8 minutes” as

“Pastor timer, 8 minutes”.

I have no idea why Siri would associate a timer with a Pastor. I mean, I’m not boiling missionaries in my kitchen and if I was it would have to be a lot longer than 8-10 minutes…

And for their next trick on this switch: The web UI names the ports GE1, GE2, … while the console names the ports gi1, gi2, …

😞

WTF Cisco? Who in their right mind numbers switch ports from left to right in two rows?

OK - this is just adorable and I want one: https://www.telotrucks.com but I doubt that they will be available on launch in the EU.

(Of course I can't afford one right now either, so that's probably OK)

In Erik's recurring rant about “words mean things”. A bitcoin is not “worth” $100,000. There are just some people that are willing to pay $100,000 for a bitcoin at this particular point in time. The best I can come up with is that the current price of a bitcoin is $100,000.

Words like worth, cost, price and value are frequently used as synonyms and they are not.

Good: FTC bans two data brokers from collecting and selling Americans' sensitive location data

Better: FTC bans data brokers from collecting and selling Americans' sensitive location data

Even better: FTC bans data brokers from collecting and selling location data

Best: FTC bans data brokers

Just keep removing the qualifiers and you get to a good place

Oh dear - I have reached the point now where any service or app I'm interested in that mentions AI has me actually going and reading their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy documents.

How did we get here?

PS: Any company that sends me a notification that their TOS has changed should be obliged to provide a diff from the previous version. Hmm. Maybe we need a law that all TOS documents must be in plain text and available via git…

Mentioning this because I have dealt with 3 instances of this in the last week with people reasonably proficient in using their computers for what they need their computer to do.

Can someone explain to me the attraction that sites that should know better (like banks) use pop-ups for encapsulating downloads.

End-users that aren’t paying close attention don't see the pop-up blocked alerts in the navigation bar and are completely perplexed as to what happened.

I’m hoping that the integration of Shortcuts (née Workflow) will give Apple a roadmap for integrating this kind of product/company/team to give them the resources and space to flourish, either integrated in the OS or as standalone apps

Finally got around the putting my SSH keys into @1password

Once you get things setup it’s a pretty painless workflow on a Mac with biometric authentication.

The setup process could use a few tweaks as there are a few non-obvious steps around the agent.toml file, but once I found the documentation, it was fine
